The first complete monograph of artist Walter Tandy Murch explores the life of an unsung yet remarkable artist whose paintings and illustrations of everyday objects and mechanical devices are familiar yet mysterious, or as George Lucas puts it, “in a magical middle.” Walter Tandy Murch (1907–1967) is best known for his enigmatic, dreamlike still life paintings of everyday objects and mechanical devices in a style that falls between Magic Realist, Surrealist, and Realist. This volume offers the most comprehensive collection of his work, including his striking commercial work for magazines and his paintings from the extensive collection of George Lucas. Lucas calls himself a “fanboy” of Murch’s art—paintings and drawings he describes as simultaneously “functional and dreamy, simple and complicated; they are quiet yet grab your attention.” The tension of these opposing reactions draws viewers into Murch’s still lifes, which caught the attention of famed art dealer Betty Parsons, who also represented artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, and Agnes Martin. Murch showed his work at Parsons’s gallery for nearly thirty years. With illuminating essays and extensive plates sections displaying Murch’s works, this celebration of an exceptionally talented and visionary artist is long overdue.

This long-overdue monograph rediscovers the fifty-year career of Robert De Niro, Sr., an important New York School painter and poet. The first comprehensive monograph on painter and poet Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), a major contributor to postwar American art, known for his unique, bold style of painterly representation. De Niro was a visionary artist in the early days of Abstract Expressionism and a celebrated member of the New York School of painters, along with Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock. Over the course of his fifty-year career, he painted portraits, still lifes, the female nude, and interiors with a signature gestural painting style and brilliant color, which bear the influence of Henri Matisse as well as his teacher, Hans Hofmann. During the height of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art in the 1960s, De Niro remained faithful to his own vision in his paintings and poetry; today his powerful figural works are ripe for rediscovery. This lavishly illustrated book brings together De Niro's paintings, prints, and drawings as well as a never- before-published selection of his writings and poetry. Featuring essays by noted scholars and an illustrated biography including many unpublished photographs and ephemera, this seminal volume explores the depth and breadth of De Niro's oeuvre.

"Defying categorization, the paintings of Walter Tandy Murch (1907-1967) have been variously described as Realist, Magic Realist and Surrealist. This publication revisits an artist who ignored mid-Twentieth century artistic currents and has been somewhat neglected as a result. Born and trained in Toronto, Murch moved to New York where he studied at the Art Students League, went on to exhibit at the Whitney Museum and establish a long association with the Betty Parsons Gallery. He excelled in book and magazine illustration, and maintained a lifelong commitment to a unique depiction of everyday objects and mechanical devices. Two thoroughly researched essays lay out the scope of Murch's diverse and original career. The publication's dustjacket opens into a large illustration. In English and French." --Book Jacket.

A visual history of the electronic age captures the collision of technology and art—and our collective visions of the future. A hidden history of the twentieth century’s brilliant innovations—as seen through art and images of electronics that fed the dreams of millions. A rich historical account of electronic technology in the twentieth century, Inside the Machine journeys from the very origins of electronics, vacuum tubes, through the invention of cathode-ray tubes and transistors to the bold frontier of digital computing in the 1960s. But, as cultural historian Megan Prelinger explores here, the history of electronics in the twentieth century is not only a history of scientific discoveries carried out in laboratories across America. It is also a story shaped by a generation of artists, designers, and creative thinkers who gave imaginative form to the most elusive matter of all: electrons and their revolutionary powers. As inventors learned to channel the flow of electrons, starting revolutions in automation, bionics, and cybernetics, generations of commercial artists moved through the traditions of Futurism, Bauhaus, modernism, and conceptual art, finding ways to link art and technology as never before. A visual tour of this dynamic era, Inside the Machine traces advances and practical revolutions in automation, bionics, computer language, and even cybernetics. Nestled alongside are surprising glimpses into the inner workings of corporations that shaped the modern world: AT&T, General Electric, Lockheed Martin. While electronics may have indelibly changed our age, Inside the Machine reveals a little-known explosion of creativity in the history of electronics and the minds behind it.

Landscapes and Structures is a striking visual tour of Switzerland's public structural landmarks through the personal view of the internationally renowned civil engineer Jürg Conzett. The book is published in conjunction with the Swiss pavilion at the Twelfth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, which Conzett curated. Civil engineering structures comprise bridges, tunnels, passageways, and other built transport routes; and Conzett and photographer Martin Linsi aimed to showcase examples that demonstrate architectural aspirations and a special relationship to the landscape. The book's twenty chapters highlight such works as the Sittertobelrailway bridge and the Susten mountain pass that contribute to pertinent discussions in design and engineering--including questions of design within the cultural heritage movement, the reciprocal relationship between a townscape and its structures, and the tradition of relying on local materials and craftsmanship. As a whole, the book serves as an insider's tour of how Switzerland's most notable public structures highlight and compliment the landscape.

THE ART OF ANDY GOLDSWORTHY This is the most comprehensive and detailed study of British artist Andy Goldsworthy, and is the only full-length exploration of Goldsworthy and his art available anywhere. The book has been completely rewritten and brought up to date for this new edition. Andy Goldsworthy makes land or earth art out of, among other materials, stacks of rocks, or stalks tied together, or mud thrown into rivers or poppy petals wrapped around boulders. His art is a sensitive, intuitive response to nature, light, time, growth, the seasons and the earth. Fully illustrated, with a revised text. Bibliography and notes. 348pp. ISBN 9781861714106. www.crmoon.com EXTRACT FROM THE CHAPTER ON GOLDSWORTHY'S LEAFWORKS It is the leafworks that are the most colourful of Andy Goldsworthy's sculptures. What the leaf sculptures show is how beautiful the colours of nature are: Goldsworthy presents the viewer with these subtle colours by contrasting one leaf with another. Maple patch grouped the red/ orange/ yellow of Japanese maple leaves together; Poppy leaves contrasted the red poppy leaves against the mid-green of an elderberry bush; a Stone Wood sculpture of 1992 consisted of poppy leaves wrapped around a hazel branch, the red constrasting vividly with the wet green leaves. Two sycamore leafworks of 1980 and 1981 are very simple: a leaf black from cows is placed against pale Autumn leaves; another leaf, bleached white, is set down on a bed of dark leaves. He pins together two colours of sycamore leaves (sycamore is a favourite Goldsworthy medium) in Sycamore leaf sections (1988), and hangs the line of leaves from a tree. Shot with the sun behind them, the photograph of the leaves shows them glowing green and gold, the two classic colours of poetry and alchemy. The Fall colours of course connote nostalgia, decadence, sensuality, Romanticism, time passing, the decay of the year, and so on. REVIEW ON AMAZON A happily received gift. It's worth the price for one who wants a scholarly while earthy (sorry, couldn't help it) approach to the work. There's a quirkiness about the writing style that is engaging and honest. I'm glad I have the book and will reread it as I purchase other books on Goldsworthy where the work is shown via great photography. REVIEW ON AMAZON This is a chatty informational book. It has stories of many artists that have been associated with Andy Goldsworthy in his long career as a contemporary nature sculptor. If you are looking for a personal history this is a book for you. REVIEW ON AMAZON I'm no expert on visual art, nor would I claim to be, but I found this to be a useful book, and the only one I've been able to find about the work of Andy Goldsworthy. The author has taken the time to round up a large amount of varied source material which makes this book well worth seeking out.
