Walled Off is a work of historical fiction about the Berlin Wall. It is the story of two young East Berliners desperately in love who are separated when a barbed-wire fence was driven into the streets and soul of Berlin, cleaving it in two for nearly thirty years. Sylvia Lenz dramatically escapes to the West on the night the Wall came down, leaving her beloved Tomas behind. He is shipped to a brutal Siberian gulag where the only thing keeping him sane is his love for Sylvia. He spends his days in isolation, writing in his mind the book that will someday set him free. Walled Off is a story of love and loss. It portrays the horrors of life in Stasiland and of incarceration in the gulags. Days stretch into months and then years. Sylvia moves on with her life in West Berlin but never stops looking over her shoulder for Tomas. Tomas becomes a world-famous author but is still trapped behind the Iron Curtain. Yet just as the Wall appears impenetrable, cracks begin to appear and David Bowie famously turns and sings his song "Heroes," and the Wall comes crumbling down. Sylvia and Tomas meet and attempt to rekindle the incredible love of their youth, but the tyranny and terror of the Berlin Wall has fundamentally changed both of them, particularly Tomas. Their love is severely tested during this dramatic historic era.

This book chronicles the creative period of the 1950s and 1960s, a high point in American art. In his collaborations with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and as a pivotal figure linking abstract expressionism and pop art, Robert Rauschenberg was part of a revolution during which artists moved art off the walls of museums and galleries and into the center of the social scene. Rauschenberg's vitally important and productive career spans this revolution, reaching beyond it to the present day. The book features the artists and the art world surrounding Rauschenberg--from Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning to Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol, together with dealers Betty Parsons, and Leo Castelli, and the patron Peggy Guggenheim.

"This is the first publication to consider art to wear, also known as wearable art, as a discrete American movement with roots and intersections in fine arts, fiber arts, craft, performance, and fashion. It looks in depth at the generation of artists who came of age in the late 1960s and 1970s and trained primarily as painters and sculptors but broke well-established boundaries in their use of nontraditional forms, materials, and techniques to create one-of-a-kind works using the body as an armature. --

In today’s world, trauma and traumatic loss are increasingly common. This book surveys the important constructs, concepts, and dynamics of trauma, loss, grief, and growth, offering resources and strategies that ministers and other spiritual caregivers can use as they support and facilitate people in their journey from trauma recovery to grief work to spiritual growth. The book presents a framework for understanding the interrelationship between trauma recovery work, grief work, and spiritual growth. The author argues that each of these components is essential for a full and complete healing from trauma and traumatic losses and that they work together in the ongoing process of healing. Traumas and traumatic losses are times of “crisis” in the sense that they are turning points in people’s lives; people can either grow through the experience or decline under the weight of their unbearable sorrow and anxiety. How people handle traumas and significant losses may be the most important variable in their psychological, relational, and spiritual health. The author gives special attention to describing ways in which God might draw close to the traumatized and bereaved in their process of recovery and healing.
