On the occasion of the bicentenary of Edward Bulwer Lytton's birth, seventeen scholars from five countries have contributed essays devoted to many aspects of his career. After the first essay that analyzes the reasons for Bulwer's extraordinary reputation in his own day, twelve of the essays focus primarily upon one or more of the novels, from Falkland (1827) to Kenelm Chillingly (1873). Other novels examined include Bulwer's The Last Days of Pompeii, The Coming Race, The Parisians, and the Caxton trilogy, as well as his Newgate novels. In the volume are also considerations of the seminal treatise England and the English (1833), the incomplete history of Athens (1837), and the achievement of Bulwer Lytton as Colonial Secretary (1858-59). Two essays, one written by a descendant of Bulwer, deal with the overshadowing disaster of his life, the marriage to Rosina Wheeler, herself a novelist whose novels sought to undermine his. Bulwer emerges from this collection of essays as a challengingly complex but coherent figure that merits the respect of contemporary students of the Victorian phenomenon.

How could a man fabled for his wisdom reach the conclusion that God was false? The Armageddon Conspiracy reveals the answer to this greatest Biblical mystery. The Temple of Solomon was not the house of God at all but a special chamber designed to contain a unique weapon, for which Solomon had the most astounding purpose in mind. Solomon, a man obsessed with witchcraft and magic, believed he had found the key to the supreme mystery of life, but he died before he could complete his mission. The world's oldest secret society, of which Solomon was the Grand Master, still exists and now its members are about to perform the final cataclysmic ceremony Solomon had planned for so long. For the Victorians, electricity was the science of spectacle and of wonder. It provided them with new ways of probing the nature of reality and understanding themselves. Luigi Galvani's discovery of 'animal electricity' at the end of the eighteenth century opened up a whole new world of possibilities, in which electricity could cure sickness, restore sexual potency and even raise the dead. In Shocking Bodies, Iwan Rhys Morus explores how the Victorians thought about electricity, and how they tried to use its intimate and corporeal force to answer fundamental questions about life and death. Some even believed that electricity was life, which brought into question the existence of the soul, and of God, and provided arguments in favour of political radicalism. This is the story of how electricity emerged as a powerful new tool for making sense of our bodies and the world around us.

Vril is the soul of the universe. Nothing on earth can be compared with it. The vril of the “Coming Race” was once the common property of races now extinct. Its Atlantean name was Mash-Mak. But its Aryan name is being withheld. Why the true nature of this mighty force is and will remain a secret? Because it might be used to kill, to alter, to move, or otherwise change any object or condition. That is why the real secrets of nature will not be revealed to the profane. For the destructive power of vril is not altogether a fiction. Its power can destroy in one moment whole armies. When man understands the laws and centres of force in himself, he can make visible and material what was before invisible and ideal — at will.

Defying the hand of time, the vain inquiry of profane science, the insults of the “revealed” religions, they will disclose their riddles to none but the legatees of those by whom they were entrusted with the Mystery. The key was in the keeping of those who knew how to commune with the invisible Presence, and who had received from the lips of mother Nature herself, her grand truths. And so stand these imperial monuments of long-crumbled dynasties, like mute, forgotten sentinels on the threshold of that unseen world, whose gates are thrown open but to a few elect.
