Adolescents and young people have repeatedly proven that they can provide innovative solutions in the midst of complex humanitarian crises. Soon after the December 2004 tsunami they mobilized, helping to distribute aid, assisting with clean-up and rebuilding, and caring for those younger than themselves. Yet their enthusiasm, creativity and energy is not being fully utilized in rehabilitation and development efforts. This publication highlights the helpful, analytical and compassionate comments they made on UNICEF's Voices of Youth website, and firmly states that "it is time to listen" to these young people and to engage them as key partners.

DIVDecades have passed since Nick Seafort battled the vicious aliens. Now, in the fifth installment of the celebrated Seafort Saga, it’s trouble on Earth that looms . . ./divDIV Everyone knows Nick Seafort as “the Fisherman”—the hero who stopped the merciless, fishlike aliens when they attacked Earth. Voices of Hope picks up with Seafort decades later, after he’s retired as the Secretary General of the United Nations. Despite his trappings of power, he has been unable to aid the so-called transpops, desperate people who live in the dangerous lower levels of New York City./divDIV /divDIVWhen Seafort’s son, Philip, follows a friend into the streets of New York, he encounters the transpop culture—one evolved to exist in the shadows and operate with ruthless efficiency. The trannies are a powder keg ready to blow, and a water shortage appears to be the spark to prove that humans can be far more dangerous than any outer-space alien. Long ago, Seafort had braved these violent streets to find his wife; now he must return to save his son./div

As a chaplain, Desmond Haye has helped those receiving care as well as bereaved loved ones who often feel hopeless. In these moments, inspiring survivors to maintain a sense of hope is crucial. In sharing the seven stories in The Voice of Hope, the author aims to help those waging a life-and-death battle—as well as those who care about them the most. Each chapter begins with an exemplary story and concludes with a short recitative prayer that readers may use to meditate on the teaching, followed by a set of questions to think and talk through. The author writes, “Hope says there is a brighter tomorrow beyond the darkness of the tomb. Hope says when you walk through the dark valley of scary diagnosis and painful prognosis, God is with you, and you will never walk alone. Amid pain and perplexing circumstances, hope speaks words of assurance and comfort. Hope says death will one day die, but those who trust in God will live again.” Whether you carry out your mission at a health care institution, hospice, in a house of worship, or elsewhere, this compendium of inspirational stories will help you and those you serve find hope even in the darkest hours. The Voice of Hope helps those waging a life-and-death battle—as well as their loved ones and caregivers—find hope even in the darkest hours.

Voice of Hope is comprised of inspirational poems and words to soothe and comfort the soul. It tackles and addresses fears, roadblocks, betrayal, self-doubt, social injustice, and other issues that may have, and have, arisen in anyone's life. It's thought-provoking and stirs up social norms and practices. Sometimes it reflects and laments over choices made in life. But in spite of all that, there are silver linings along the way. In the midst of all the challenges, one learns from failures and errors, and subsequently copes and thrives. Voice of Hope reminds us of the promises made by the Almighty. It will strengthen, heal, and lift the spirit. With faith like a mustard seed and hope at the helm, one can rise from the ashes. Regardless of financial status, pigmentation of skin, origin, or mistakes made along the way, one can recalibrate and breathe new life. Though there are sufferings, deficiencies, and setbacks, one can gain redemption and thrive in their true God-given potentials

Nazzal’s poems are first and foremost about love, nature and the beauty of little things in life. He is a skilled observer who describes our daily lives with depth and passion, and through his poems he urges us to enjoy and take care of the things we are so lucky to have in our lives. Born in a family of refugees, and himself a refugee from war and misery, he is seeking peace in his own life and for the rest of the world. And he does this by concentrating about the things that really matter in our lives, like our loved ones. His deep love for the human race and the Earth shines through all the way. And the same does his heritage. Even though the themes in the poems most often are universal, and are written about and in Norway, the atmosphere is filled with the music, fragrances and sounds of the Middle East. He might not live there anymore, has not done so for years, but the longing to be back in a world that does not longer exist, is present in every word he writes, in the rhytm of every poem. We hear about inadequate mental health care. We ask questions regarding a link between mental illness and violence. We do NOT hear as much about the stigma of mental illness that complicates one's ability to cope with a diagnosis that becomes a label, resulting in "self-stigma,"discouraging individuals from seeking and/or complying with treatment. Too often community members only "experience" mental illness through dramatic or dire media stories that fail to inform us about the real world of mental illness. Thus, stigma feeds, and is fed by, myths and misunderstandings leading to a community sense of hopelessness and fear of mental illness. In contrast, Geel, a stigma-free community in Belgium, has a centuries' old history of accepting those with mental illness - even as boarders in their own homes. Geel acknowledges the human needs of those with mental illness and responds to those needs by providing social opportunities and meaningful work, within the community While the U.S. does not have the same history as Geel, we do have programs that offer a fostering environment, offering hope for those with a diagnosis of mental illness as well as for the communities in which they live. In a language and style that can be understood by anyone and everyone, the author shares what she's learned and experienced regarding tolerance and inclusion - in Geel and in our own country - offering individuals and communities an opportunity to hear the encouraging "voices of hope for mental illness." When the general population is freed of myths and misunderstandings regarding mental illness, we can focus on mental health fostered by community care that thrives in "caring communities."
