The long-standing view that idioms are formally and thus also semantically fixed has been challenged and many studies have shown that idioms are indeed flexible both structurally and semantically to varying degrees. We often come across examples of creatively used idioms, with their original structure disrupted and their semantics affected in the process. This book presents an analysis of how the processes described in Conceptual Blending Theory can be applied in practice, on the basis of Michał Batory’s posters designed for artistic events. Therefore, it begins with an introduction of the origins of Conceptual Blending Theory, the very nature and elements of conceptual blending as a linguistic and mental phenomenon. It also provides an overview of the models and types of integration networks, which is followed by an analysis of vital relations that accompany the blending process. Importantly, the principles constraining Conceptual Blending Theory, together with the criticism levelled at Fauconnier and Turner’s approach are put forward. The book then moves on to analyse Michał Batory’s posters in terms of conceptual blending processes. The blended space is meticulously discussed and illustrated to show explicitly how two distinct notions are combined to create a new meaning that is non-computable from the two input spaces. The interaction that occurs between the inscriptions and images is very distinct in every single poster. The analysis highlights how Batory’s artefacts influence people and convey the hidden message, with the use of strong visual and verbal elements that accompany the blending process.

The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the conference Cognitive Approaches to English, an international event organized to mark the 30th anniversary of English studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University, Osijek, which was held in Osijek on October 18–19, 2007. The participants were invited to discuss issues in cognitive accounts of English, ranging from fundamental to methodological to interdisciplinary and applied. The volume is accordingly divided into four parts. Part I, Motivation in grammar, deals with various phenomena in the grammar of English in the broadest sense of the term, all of which are shown to be motivated by metaphorical and/or metonymic operations. Part II, Constructing meaning (between grammar and lexicon), contains five chapters dealing with phenomena ranging from various peculiarities of form-meaning pairings (such as synonymy, polysemy, and figurative meanings) to concept formation. The four chapters that make up Part III are concerned with the phenomenon of interlinguistic and intercultural variation in the use of metaphorical and metonymic processes. The volume is concluded by Part IV, the three papers of which attempt to reconsider some TEFL issues from a cognitive linguistic point of view.

Enactive approaches to consciousness and cognition foreground the role of interaction in explanations of social understanding, which includes the human practices of telling and reading stories. Such an understanding of narrative makes a decisive break with both text-centred approaches that have dominated structuralist and early cognitivist views of narrative meaning, as well as pragmatic ones that view narrative understanding as a form of linguistic implicature.
