Excerpt from Nitrogen-Pressurized Spray System for C-47 Airplanes: December 1972 Expelling the insecticide with nitrogen rather than with a pump driven by a windmill, gasoline engine, hydraulic motor, etc., has many advantages. Gasoline engines introduce the hazard of noxious, explosive fumes. Pumps often leak around seals and contaminate the aircraft with insecticide. Because of its simple design, the nitrogen system is easy to install and operate, and it is reliable. This report describes the nitrogen-pressurized spray system, installation, operation, performance, and procurement. The system is not available commercially. However, most parts are stock items, or can be readily fabricated, except the tank. The tank can be manufactured by metal fabricators equipped to build aluminum pressure vessels to the asme code. The USAF "Thunderbirds" flew the McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II aircraft from 1969 through 1973. This aircraft, arguably the best fighter aircraft of its time, was used extensively in the Vietnam War. The Thunderbirds used eleven of these machines. Two of them were lost to crashes, but nine remained for posterity. All but two are on display throughout the country. This book chronicles an exciting motorcycle trip by the author, a Thunderbird who flew in these aircraft during 1970-1972, to visit all of the remaining nine phantoms. His coast-to-coast journey covered nearly 8,000 miles and provided an endless array of wonder and a bottomless well of memories. Filled with scores of color images, it details the vistas, events and thoughts that constantly bombarded the authors senses as he pursued his quest to visit old friends from the past.

The #1 New York Times bestseller and the true story behind the film: A rugby team resorts to the unthinkable after a plane crash in the Andes. Spirits were high when the Fairchild F-227 took off from Mendoza, Argentina, and headed for Santiago, Chile. On board were forty-five people, including an amateur rugby team from Uruguay and their friends and family. The skies were clear that Friday, October 13, 1972, and at 3:30 p.m., the Fairchild’s pilot reported their altitude at 15,000 feet. But one minute later, the Santiago control tower lost all contact with the aircraft. For eight days, Chileans, Uruguayans, and Argentinians searched for it, but snowfall in the Andes had been heavy, and the odds of locating any wreckage were slim. Ten weeks later, a Chilean peasant in a remote valley noticed two haggard men desperately gesticulating to him from across a river. He threw them a pen and paper, and the note they tossed back read: “I come from a plane that fell in the mountains . . .” Sixteen of the original forty-five passengers on the F-227 survived its horrific crash. In the remote glacial wilderness, they camped in the plane’s fuselage, where they faced freezing temperatures, life-threatening injuries, an avalanche, and imminent starvation. As their meager food supplies ran out, and after they heard on a patched-together radio that the search parties had been called off, it seemed like all hope was lost. To save their own lives, these men and women not only had to keep their faith, they had to make an impossible decision: Should they eat the flesh of their dead friends? A remarkable story of endurance and determination, friendship and the human spirit, Alive is the dramatic bestselling account of one of the most harrowing quests for survival in modern times.

As America confronts an unpredictable war in Iraq, Randolph returns to an earlier conflict that severely tested our civilian and military leaders. In 1972, America sought to withdraw from Vietnam with its credibility intact, with President Nixon and National Security Advisor Kissinger hoping that gains on the battlefield would strengthen their position at the negotiating table. Randolph's intimate chronicle of the commander-in-chief gains us unprecedented access to how these strategic assessments were made and played out.
