The case was this: Paul and Silas were taken up for preach ing the gospel, and brought before the rulers. The rulers unjustly caused them to be severely whipped, and then cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely; who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
