Rotating machinery is the heart of many industrial operations, but many engineers and technicians perform shaft alignment by guesswork or with limited knowledge of the tools and methods available to accurately and effectively align their machinery. Two decades ago, John Piotrowski conferred upon the field an unprecedented tool: the first edition of

Rotordynamics are of great importance in the design, manufacture and assembly of turbomachines as well as in ensuring their safe operation. Also important are the dynamics of the foundation and its interaction with the dynamics of the rotor. This book is divided into four parts. Following a presentation of the basic theory the dynamics of rotors supported on several bearings. The third part describes the dynamics of foundations of turbine line-outs and the calculations for a turbomachine coupled with its foundation. The last part includes a section on estimation procedures, a comprehensive presentation of the theoryand practice of rotors having a transverse crack, a section on the mathematical fundamentals and a description of the computer program used for the examples in the book. The book addresses both the practical engineer and the theoretician and should provide manufacturers, operators, university and polytechnic lecturers and students with an understanding of the vibrations of turbomachines. The results are described in such a way that they can be easily understood and applied.

This book opens with an explanation of the vibrations of a single degree-of-freedom (dof) system for all beginners. Subsequently, vibration analysis of multi-dof systems is explained by modal analysis. Mode synthesis modeling is then introduced for system reduction, which aids understanding in a simplified manner of how complicated rotors behave. Rotor balancing techniques are offered for rigid and flexible rotors through several examples. Consideration of gyroscopic influences on the rotordynamics is then provided and vibration evaluation of a rotor-bearing system is emphasized in terms of forward and backward whirl rotor motions through eigenvalue (natural frequency and damping ratio) analysis. In addition to these rotordynamics concerning rotating shaft vibration measured in a stationary reference frame, blade vibrations are analyzed with Coriolis forces expressed in a rotating reference frame. Other phenomena that may be assessed in stationary and rotating reference frames include stability characteristics due to rotor internal damping and instabilities due to asymmetric shaft stiffness and thermal unbalance behavior.

Rotating machinery is used in a variety of essential engineering systems, including motors, pumps, compressors, and gearboxes. The gas, oil, power, manufacturing, and process industries rely heavily on rotating machines. Their failures can be very expensive and lead to a decrease in production so proper maintenance is essential. Condition based maintenance is a relatively new strategy of performing maintenance on equipment when signal processing of sensor signals indicates a failure may be imminent. The most popular sensors for condition based maintenance measure the vibration of the rotating machine. These sensors provide information about the overall state of the machine and point to potential faults. This thesis studies the effectiveness of analyzing vibration data to determine the state of operation of rotating machine systems. Specifically, research and experiments are performed to discover if vibration signatures can determine if a system has certain faults, such as shaft misalignment, unbalance, or deformation in shaft couplings. The presence or absence of these faults can lead to the determination of the health of operation of a rotating machine system.

How-to-do-it guide to eliminating machine vibrations One of the most common causes of severe machinery vibration is the misalignment of drive shafts and othercomponents. Machinery Vibration: Alignment, by Victor Wowk, gives you a practical resource for aligning shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys and a wide variety of power transmission components in machines without further training. You get step-by-step procedures for balancing, resonance, structural vibrations, isolation, instruments, diagnostics, and trending. Many of the methods described require only simple tools, eliminating the need for a $20,000 laser alignment system. Case studies covering everything from simple fans to high-speed turbines give you examples of real-world problem solving. You will find the extensive coverage of the FFT spectrum analyzer a valuable addition to this hands-on toolkit.

Machinery Vibration Analysis and Predictive Maintenance provides a detailed examination of the detection, location and diagnosis of faults in rotating and reciprocating machinery using vibration analysis. The basics and underlying physics of vibration signals are first examined. The acquisition and processing of signals is then reviewed followed by a discussion of machinery fault diagnosis using vibration analysis. Hereafter the important issue of rectifying faults that have been identified using vibration analysis is covered. The book also covers the other techniques of predictive maintenance such as oil and particle analysis, ultrasound and infrared thermography. The latest approaches and equipment used together with the latest techniques in vibration analysis emerging from current research are also highlighted. Understand the basics of vibration measurement Apply vibration analysis for different machinery faults Diagnose machinery-related problems with vibration analysis techniques
