Limnology is increasingly concerned with water supply and the relation of man to aquatic environments. Without the continued availability of pure water, all progress in technology and other fields of human life will be to no avail. The global problems concerning clear water are already extremely pressing. More limnology knowledge is needed to solve these problems. The responsibility of man to save water and to take more intensive care of the environment is raised in many of the papers, in this book. This emphasizes the necessary and unquestionable relevance of limnology to human society. Too often the abuse of water usage reflects the neglect of scientific results. Limnologists have a responsibility to ensure that administrators understand what is going on. The coverage of the book is wide, including papers on microbiology to engineering sciences. The biology of waters is handled at both species and ecosystem levels. The geographical distribution of topics ranges from the tropics to northern temperate areas. In fact, limnology is increasingly becoming a science which is, rightly, relevant to everyday life, not just an academic subject.

Continuing concern about water supply and quality, ecosystem sustainability and restoration demands that the modern approach to the management of lakes and reservoirs should be based on a sound understanding of the application of the scientific and ecological principles that underlie freshwater processes. The Lakes Handbook provides an up-to-date overview of the application of ecologically sound approaches, methods and tools using experience gained around the world for an understanding of lakes and their management. Volume one of the Handbook addresses the physical and biological aspects of lakes pertinent to lake management, emphasising those aspects particularly relevant to large, still bodies of water. Volume two then considers lake management, with particular emphasis on sustainability, restoration and rehabilitation. This handbook will be invaluable to ecologists, environmental scientists, physical geographers and hydrologists involved in limnological research, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students looking for authoritative reviews of the key areas of limnological study. Brings together basic science and management issues. International coverage and international authors. Reviews management issues at a level suitable for the non-expert.

The PELAG 1996 Symposium Proceedings provides the reader with the latest advances in the study of planktonic cycling of matter and energy, placing a strong emphasis on the effects of eutrophication on these processes. This book covers a wide range of topics in the field, including: Nutrient limitation of phytoplankton growth Nutrient cycles in the planktonic food web DOM sources, composition, and uptake Resource limitation vs. shaping of the food web by grazing Spatio-temporal variability: coupling of physical and biological processes Processes controlling sinking losses from the pelagic system Planktonic food web modelling . The book should be of interest to everybody involved in planktonic ecosystem research, from the advanced student to the distinguished scientist. This volume brings to the reader the expertise of internationally renowned authors on the main issues of today's ecological plankton research.

Multiple use of natural waters and watersheds poses many practical problems, some of which are clearly limnological, relating for example to carrying capacities oflakes, deterioration of water quality and fisheries management. It is thus important to consider limnological aspects when making decisions in the field of water management. To further this attitude the Finnish Limnological Society considered 'Lakes and Water Management' to be a suitable theme for the Society's Jubilee Symposium, held in Helsinki on 22-23 September, 1980 at the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki, to mark the Society's 30th Anniversary. The Finnish Limnological Society has arranged nationallimnological symposia everyone or two years. The papers presented at these symposia have been published in the series 'Limnologisymposion' (in Finnish or Swedish, with short summaries in an internationally spoken language). Due to financial difficulties, the series was terminated as of the symposium in 1979. When preparing the 30th Anniversary of the Finnish Limnological Society, the Governing Board of the Society decided to arrange an international symposium on a theme relevant to modern limnology both in Finland and elsewhere. The selected results of the successful meeting on lakes and water management, which was attended by 220 people from 7 countries, are presented in this volume.

Over the last 20-30 years the number of food poisoning incidents has increased considerably and this has had disastrous effects both on consumers and the food industry. Several food industries went bankrupt due to huge amounts of money paid to compensate consumers' family/relatives. These unfortunate incidents triggered consumer and governmental aw

This book is an introduction to freshwater fish ecology. The book covers the process of planning and conducting fish surveys in freshwater, describes the available practical methods for sampling and analysing, and provides some examples of statistical treatments, with considerations and conclusions based on these. It will be of interest to bachelor’s and master’s students of fish biology and management, libraries, and laboratories of fish/wildlife management services and research.
