Shiva is the Truth. Siva is God. Shiva is the Trinity – Creator-Sustainer-Destroyer. Shiva is the consort of Parvati. Shiva is the Guru. In this beautiful hymn, Vedasara Shiva Stotram, Shri Shankaracharya sings Shiva’s glories as the very essence of the scriptures, the formless Truth, and as God in His various forms like the Trinity, consort of Parvati and Guru. Swami Tejomayananda’s beautiful commentary fills our minds with auspiciousness (Shiva) as we read, remember, chant, study, reflect, worship and meditate on Shiva.

The bee (Ṣaṭpadī) serenades the flower with its humming and the rhythmic beat of its wings and then in silence enjoys the nectar. Shatpadi, is a literary and devotional masterpiece of Śrī Ᾱdi Śaṅkarācārya, singing and chanting which our minds get absorbed in its nectar-like meaning. The bee gently unfolds the petals of the flowers and dives deep to revel in the flavor of the nectar. Swami Tejomayananda’s beautiful commentary unfolds the wonderful felling (bhāva) of this prayer and inspires us too, to surrender at the lotus-feet of the compassionate Lord of the universe and the Self of all – Viṣṇu.

Having torn down the veil of ignorance, the wise mendicant, knows the secret of true Bliss. He keeps nothing, wants nothing, lives in a home without walls and furniture, is ever calm and serene and sleeps blissfully at the foot of a tree with the sky for a roof and earth for his bed.

In this book I will explain the meaning of 108 names of Shiva which is given in shiva-rahasya-khanda of Skanda purāna. This particular hymn is considered one of the most important hymns of Shiva. We can find authentic commentaries on this hymn by many great scholars of Purāna, and mantra shāstra. Shiva Tatva Rahasya of Neelakantha Deekshita - a profound Shaivate scholar, a great Vaidika and a great Agama and mantra shāstras scholar which is an elaborate commentary of the hymn and the other work is Shivanāmakalpalata of Bhaskara Raaya - A profound Shākta and a great scholar of, puranas, Agamas and mantrashāstras. The work Shivanāmakalpalata is in the form of a poetic hymn rather than a commentary. The hymn shows us the meaning of each name of Shiva ashtottara shatanāma stotra through each Shloka. We can also find explanations of the names of Lord Shiva in various texts, like in Mahabharata, in commentaries of Shree Rudra Prashna and commentaries of Vedas, in āgamas and purānas.
