Gong Dong and Vector Architects are in the vanguard of a new generation of Chinese architects who are revealing extraordinary approaches to building and design that marry tradition with an ever-more-thrilling modernism. Gong Dong’s architecture evocatively combines features of the modern with lessons learned from China’s old culture of craftsmanship while giving utmost attention to the experiential qualities of design. Beyond great facility, the firm is celebrated for exploring the possibilities of sustainability and eco-sensitive construction. Recently featured in the exhibition Reuse, Renew, Recycle: Recent Architecture from China at New York’s MoMA, Dong’s work was singled out for the Alila Yangshio Hotel. A readaptation of an old industrial site and former sugar factory near the Chinese city of Guilin, known for its dramatic landscape of precipitous limestone karst hills, the hotel embraces the extraordinary site, with pools that reflect the stunning surrounds, while also offering great comfort and ease to guests. The book presents the firm’s most breathtaking work, from its celebrated Seashore Chapel, which suggests a marriage of the cerebral power of Le Corbusier and the refined magic of Tadao Ando while making a serene and unique statement of its own, to the magical Captain’s House, a renovation of a modernist dwelling set atop a cliff overlooking a fishing village and the sea. This elegantly illustrated and beautifully designed book is the first in English to comprehensively document this exceptionally high quality, quietly rich, and greatly rewarding architecture.

A new generation is shaping China's architecture In recent years, a refreshingly unconventional architectural scene – outside the mainstream – has established itself in China. Its representatives, many of whom were trained in the West, are known for their sensitive handling of space, light, and material, and by their engagement with context and their own tradition. Since Wang Shu, one of the most important representatives of the profession, won the Pritzker Prize, international professionals have become more aware of China’s new architecture. Twenty fascinating examples of different building typologies—many with social relevance – as well as an introductory essay illustrate current building activities and provide an insight into the cultural and architectonic influences. An extensively revised and updated edition of a bestselling classic on modern architecture and its origins by Kenneth Frampton. Kenneth Frampton’s highly acclaimed survey of modern architecture and its origins has been a classic since it first appeared in 1980. Starting with the cultural developments since 1750 that drove the modern movement, moving through the creation of modern architecture, and exploring the effects of globalization and the phenomenon of international celebrity architects, this book is the definitive history of modern architecture. For this extensively revised and updated fifth edition of Modern Architecture, Frampton added new chapters exploring the ongoing modernist tradition in architecture while also examining the varied responses to the urgent need to build more sustainably and create structures that will withstand changing climates. This new edition features completely redesigned interiors and an updated and expanded bibliography, making this volume more indispensable than ever.

For the past 30 years, The Chinese journal Time + Architecture (Shidai Jianzhu) has focused on publishing innovative and exploratory work by emerging architects based in private design firms who were committed to new material, theoretical and pedagogical practices. In doing so, this book argues that the journal has engaged in the presentation and production of a particular form of critical architecture - described as an ’intermediate criticality’ - as a response to the particular constraints of the Chinese cultural and political context. The journal’s publications displayed a ’dual critique’ - a resistant attitude to the dominant modes of commercial building practice, characterised by rapid and large-scale urban expansion, and an alternative publishing practice focusing on emerging, independent architectural practitioners through the active integration of theoretical debates, architectural projects, and criticisms. This dual critique is illustrated through a careful review and analysis of the history and programme of the journal. By showing how the work of emerging architects, including Yung Ho Chang, Wang Shu, Liu Jiakun and Urbanus, are situated within the context of the journal’s special thematic editions on experimental architecture, exhibition, group design, new urban space and professional system, the book assesses the contribution the journal has made to the emergence of a critical architecture in China, in the context of how it was articulated, debated, presented and perhaps even ’produced’ within the pages of the publication itself. The protagonists of critical architecture have endeavoured to construct an alternative mode of form and space with strong aesthetic and socio-political implications to the predominant production of architecture under the current Chinese socialist market economy. To rebel against certain forms of domination and suppression by capital and power is by no means to completely reject them; rather, it is to use thos

Today, architecture in China is at a watershed. Over the last decade, rapid urbanisation and the burgeoning economy turned the country into a playground for the world’s signature architects, making it possible to realise extravagant forms and structures at a vast scale. The Chinese government has now drawn a line under this phenomenon by issuing a directive calling an end to the ‘oversized, xenocentric, weird’ buildings devoid of character or cultural heritage that have sprung up across the country, requiring that urban architecture be 'suitable, economic, green and pleasing to the eye'. This government directive comes at a time when homegrown architecture has become increasingly self-assured and reflective in its approach. A new generation of architects in China in their 30s and 40s are emerging, and in a wholly contemporary way they are exploring local responses to often bewildering urban and rural conditions and serious social and environmental challenges. This is often expressed through a revival of interest in traditional street patterns, courtyards and gardens. At the same time, architects are also recognising the opportunities to harness the potential of China’s established manufacturing base to develop prefabricated building systems. Innovative practices are employing new modes of working, such as research-based studio teaching and exhibitions, field workshops, cross-disciplinary collaboration, laboratory-based practice, design think-tanks and collective projects, generating a vibrant culture of design research. While 20th century architecture learned to control the climate of a building, the architecture of the 21st century needs to learn to cope with the climate of cities. Problems such as urban heat and air pollution need to be included in planning and design. Based on empirical realities in Cairo, Chongqing, Geneva and Santiago de Chile, the book underlines that the materiality and social practices attached to room heating, compound greening, street alignment or climate policies together form the tissue for contemporary urban climates. It interweaves socio-cultural with meteorological data and pioneers the new concept of "thermal governance" by linking architectural and technological as well as legal and economic dimensions of climate control in urban environments.
