Excerpt from Illinois in the Eighteenth Century: A Report on the Documents in Belleville, Illinois, Illustrating the Early History of the State It seems best to preface this catalog with a brief history of the institutions and the laws under which these documents originated, and also to give some account of the men who have written them. The proposed limits of the report will not include a study of political events or an analysis of the documents themselves in order to dis cover their evidence ou the political, legal, and social conditions of the times. For this reason the documents have been little used, except in two cases. Such a study must be made, but it will be several months before it can be completed, and the desirability of an early report to the trustees of the Historical Library has determined the limits of this preliminary study.
