Escorting three escaped convicts back to Fort Smith, Arkansas, to hang should be an easy enough task even from Shreveport, Louisiana. Boring and long, but easy . . . and Marshal Rodney Taylor was saddled with the job. Having seen the prison at Fort Smith, he knew that escape was not possible without help and related that belief to Upshur, who then volunteered to go with him. They were right! From the moment they left Shreveport with the prisoners, they were followed by the same men who had abetted their escape from prison . . . and they had plans to do it again! Only this time, they would have to kill a U, S. Marshal, and Bill Upshur to free them, and were relentless in their pursuit. Upshur would pit his skills against an ex-military sniper in the Union Army, a man, with the mind of a genius when it came to tactical planning, and procedures. A man with medals to prove it! Only this time, for the first time, frustration had entered his mind, making him unsure of his movements. And he would need to accomplish the task at hand to renew his own self confidence! But Upshur was determined not to allow Rodney to fail his last mission as Marshal, as he has planned to resign his post on arrival at Fort Smith. He would somehow see that he succeeded, and returned home to his family alive and well. Why would he do this, when so many others would not? Because he is Upshur, and its his way!

Billy Upshur had always been a man of reason, able to think out any problem that might arise and handle it objectively. It was his nature if it involved family. If it did not have to do with family, it could most generally be solved with a gun in one way or another. But the one he had on returning home with his family and friends, could not be solved with tact, or with his gun. The one he had now, was one he was trying desperately to push to the back of his mind, hopefully, even to forget. But it was hard, because Jaclyn Garnette was a woman he would remember for as long as he lived. He would never hurt Connie, that was unthinkable, his love for her was never ending, and just the thought of leaving his beloved family for another woman was devastating to even think about. It would never happen, he knew this, but it was hard to look at Connie with Jaclyn on his mind, thats why he spent a great many late afternoons at the corral grooming the little Roan mustang, and the big black Jim Stockwell had given him. After several months, he did manage to push Jaclyn aside, or so he thought. Because as the old saying goes, when it rains, it pours! As fate was bound to have it, they were all sitting down to supper late one afternoon when Rodney brought news of a heartbreaking event, one that almost broke his heart, one that would throw him back into the role of gunfighter, and manhunter. Jaclyns Foreman had been murdered, and she herself seriously wounded, and fighting for her life. To Billy Upshur, they both were considered family, and without saying, when family was wronged, as was his way, he would see about it! Only this time, Connie insisted on going back with him, because Jaclyn was the woman that saved his life, and she was bent on being there for her as well. It also meant that Rodney, and his wife were to go with him also, and he dared not refuse any of them. Something was definitely wrong in Decatur, Texas, and he had been summoned by Jaclyns friends to make it right again, and if it was the last thing he ever did, he would see about it!

As a body, these records are extracted from roughly 750 known Bibles and extend from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries, with the greatest concentration from the mid-19th century. Most of the entries refer to births, marriages, and deaths and in most cases indicate the name(s) of the principals, the date of the event, and, sometimes, such supplementary information as his/her age or address, the maiden name of a parent, etc. Each Bible record is identified by family name and followed by a reference to the Huguenot Society records where the original can be found. In all, the records refer to more than 2,500 main families named in the surname index at the back of the volume and embrace a staggering 25,000 individuals of Huguenot or possible Huguenot ancestry--connections and allied families that would otherwise be lost to us in the unpublished files of this august organization.
