Unleash Your Imagination is all about the wonderful adventure of developing a vision for a new life. Written by acclaimed fine artist and designer Dennis Kleidon, Unleash shows how to use design thinking to challenge your normal routines, increase the power of your imagination, and harness new sources of creativity. A designer’s approach encourages an open mind and curious spirit, leading to fresh solutions you may never have imagined. By approaching change like a designer, you can find your life’s purpose and shape a direction guided by it. Both analytical and creative, this process replaces blank-page panic with the thrill of new possibilities. Unleash Your Imagination brings in the wisdom of many artists, architects, and designers, from ancient philosophers to today's leaders in positive psychology, letting great thinkers guide you toward an exciting future of optimism, happiness, and achievement. Kleidon reminds us that we are each responsible for our life and for designing our life. As Buckminster Fuller said, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” As the designer of your life and with Unleash Your Imagination as your guide, you can plan an extraordinary life with greater purpose and meaning. This is especially useful if you are facing or planning for an important turning point in life. Unleash helps you think through the process of change by using your imagination to unleash your long-standing desires and integrate them into your current life. Changing in this authentic way can enhance the quality of your life. It can let you go beyond yourself to contribute to the world. Life is a continuous design process, Kleidon says, as he describes a thoughtful, methodical approach to discovery, experimentation, and planning.

"Bruce and Amy don't target your rational, logical, orderly side; plenty of books do that. Instead, they trust the power of your brain and heart to come up with amazing possibilities -- to let you wander, explore, imagine, and experience as you discover ways to unlock your full potential." - Jeff Haden, Inc.com The stories you tell yourself have immense power. They can motivate or discourage you. They can cause you to grow or stagnate. But when you're living and working in an over-scheduled world, it's very easy to let these stories veer towards the negative. This book helps you tell yourself far better stories, but it doesn't tell you what to think. Instead, it starts you along a path that unlocks your imagination, creativity, and potential. To take control of the stories in your head, you need to make the process interesting, fun, engaging, rewarding, and effective. Most people skip the interesting, fun, engaging, rewarding, and effective parts... but this book doesn't. It offers short passages designed to help you escape distractions, take control of your future, and rewrite the stories you tell yourself. This book is only available in paperback so that you can scribble, draw, and take notes in the empty spaces next to each passage.

We have moved past the Information Age and are now living in the Imagination Age. Intuitive and creative thinking skills are as valuable as “hard skills” and are unique to each one of you. You have these innate skills—all you have to do is unleash them. Join up. What does imagination have to do with leadership? Ever since he was in college, Brian Paradis has been intrigued by the question, “What does imagination have to do with leadership?” For thirty years, he studied this puzzle as he honed his business and leadership skills, and one thing became crystal clear: imagination has a powerful influence on leadership. The compelling combination of leader + imagination = an opportunity to unleash all kinds of potential. The world is increasingly complex, knowledge is advancing at an unfathomable rate, and the problems in our world seem unsolvable. Organizations are in near constant and disruptive transition, and the cultures that define them are disconnected, disaffected, and divisive. Too many leaders show up to work wondering if any of it matters. We are “smarter” than any generation in history, but that isn’t the problem. The problem is imagination is not advancing at the same pace. But where there’s a closed door, there’s an open window of opportunity for those willing to walk through, to take a risk, and see what others don’t. Lead with Imagination promises three returns on your investment of time from reading it: You will be inspired by the possibilities and strengthened against the challenges. You will gain power and confidence to imagine, create, and innovate. We are all born with innate imagination and curiosity—learn how to use it. You will release your fullest potential and help release the potential of those you lead. We all learned as kindergarteners to assimilate quickly by giving the teacher (society) the desired answer, and to “fit in.” That colored our thinking from that moment forward and restricted our thinking and use of imagination. But now, it’s time to color outside the lines.

“Big ideas that just might save the world”—The Guardian The founder of the international Transition Towns movement asks why true creative, positive thinking is in decline, asserts that it's more important now than ever, and suggests ways our communities can revive and reclaim it. In these times of deep division and deeper despair, if there is a consensus about anything in the world, it is that the future is going to be awful. There is an epidemic of loneliness, an epidemic of anxiety, a mental health crisis of vast proportions, especially among young people. There’s a rise in extremist movements and governments. Catastrophic climate change. Biodiversity loss. Food insecurity. The fracturing of ecosystems and communities beyond, it seems, repair. The future—to say nothing of the present—looks grim. But as Transition movement cofounder Rob Hopkins tells us, there is plenty of evidence that things can change, and cultures can change, rapidly, dramatically, and unexpectedly—for the better. He has seen it happen around the world and in his own town of Totnes, England, where the community is becoming its own housing developer, energy company, enterprise incubator, and local food network—with cascading benefits to the community that extend far beyond the projects themselves. We do have the capability to effect dramatic change, Hopkins argues, but we’re failing because we’ve largely allowed our most critical tool to languish: human imagination. As defined by social reformer John Dewey, imagination is the ability to look at things as if they could be otherwise. The ability, that is, to ask What if? And if there was ever a time when we needed that ability, it is now. Imagination is central to empathy, to creating better lives, to envisioning and then enacting a positive future. Yet imagination is also demonstrably in decline at precisely the moment when we need it most. In this passionate exploration, Hopkins asks why imagination is in decline, and what we must do to revive and reclaim it. Once we do, there is no end to what we might accomplish. From What Is to What If is a call to action to reclaim and unleash our collective imagination, told through the stories of individuals and communities around the world who are doing it now, as we speak, and witnessing often rapid and dramatic change for the better.

Ten years ago, the editor of a leading magazine invited me to lunch. I had been one of his contributors, but we had never met. He broke the ice by asking, “What is your hobby, Mr. Osborn?” “Imagination,” I replied. He paused, then wrote on the back of an envelope, “MY HOBBY IS IMAGINATION.” “Mr. Osborn,” he said, “you must do a book on that. It’s a job that has been waiting to be done all these years. There is no subject of greater importance. You must give it the time and energy and thoroughness it deserves.” That remark started this book. Although I earned my master’s degree in practical psychology and have devoted most of my life to the psychology of advertising, I cannot claim to be a psychologist. Nor have I tried to write as a psychologist. I have felt free to take figurative liberties with academic concepts. For instance, I realize that imagination is an integral part of man’s mind-body function; and yet, for the sake of clarity and readability, I refer to imagination as if it were an entity of itself. My frequent use of the term “brainstorm” may bother the reader at first. Although Chapter 33 will fully explain, an inkling of its meaning may be helpful here: “Brainstorm” is used mainly to label the kind of conference where a few people sit down together for an hour or so solely to use their creative imaginations—solely to suggest ideas on a specific subject, right then and there. During the past ten years, in quest of material and insight, I have interviewed hundreds of people and have read hundreds of books, speeches and articles. I am indebted to all who talked with me and to all whose writings I read. Many of their names will be found in the index.
