Given the prevalence of student diversity, schools are struggling to find ways to help with the implementation of CCSS. With the wide range of student learning styles, socioeconomic backgrounds and life experiences, one key to meeting this challenge is the use of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Originally developed to address the instructional needs of students with disabilities, UDL is now being embraced as an answer to creating learning environments where all students, regardless of their individual differences, can meet the CCSS. Designed for classroom teachers, this guide provides practical strategies and best practices for utilizing UDL as a means to help students successfully access and achieve the CCSS.

Despite the fact that Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been written into all major educational laws in the United States over the past two decades, there is no evidence that schools are prepared to implement this paradigm. Given the unrestrained advocacy by the major organizations promoting UDL, there has been limited attention to the difficulties of converting UDL principles into meaningful instructional design and classroom practices. The purpose of this book is to critically examine the existing research and implementation gaps associated with UDL and to move the profession beyond the simplistic introductions to UDL that have misdirected attention away from fundamental questions. Readers will explore the potential of UDL and the significant challenges that must be confronted by policymakers, administrators, parents, teachers, publishers, instructional designers, researchers, as well as teacher educators, and resolved, if the potential of UDL is to be realized.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) emerged from the field of architectural design when federal legislation required universal access to buildings and other structures for individuals with disabilities. Architects began to design accessibility into buildings during their initial design stage rather than retrofitting standing structures. Using this architectural principle, UDL is a strategy to eliminate barriers that students may encounter to learning. Universal Design for Learning was a term coined by the Center for Accessing Special Technologies (CAST). UDL includes Universally Designed Instruction (UDI) as well as the concept of universally designed curriculum (UDC) and Universal Design in Assessment (UDA). Each of these concepts deals with the idea that education, in general, should be designed up front for access by all students, whether the curriculum, the instructional strategies, or the assessment. This document examines: (1) what UDL is and is not; (2) UDL & the link to the brain; (3) benefits of universal design; (4) UDL lessons learned; (5) implications for teachers; (6) implementation of UDL; and (7) UDL resources.

Universal design for learning (UDL) has been hailed for over a decade as a revolutionary lens that allows campuses to shift their efforts to create inclusive environments. In recent years, UDL has gone beyond the field of disability and been explored with regards to international and indigenous students. There is now a sizable body of literature that details the benefits of implementing UDL in higher education, as well as a number of emerging studies examining the strategic challenges of developing UDL across institutions. There is, however, still a relative paucity of research discussing the transformation of instruction or assessment in concrete terms. Therefore, there is a necessity for research and information on UDL that has already been implemented in classrooms and the practical examples of what this process of transformation looks like. The Handbook of Research on Applying Universal Design for Learning Across Disciplines: Concepts, Case Studies, and Practical Implementation offers practical examples of UDL having successfully been embedded in courses within various disciplines and classroom formats, as well as across the undergraduate and graduate sectors. The chapters provide case studies and concrete examples of what the UDL reflection on practice might look like in specific faculties and departments. While highlighting UDL in areas such as educational technology, student engagement, assignment design, and inclusive education, this book is ideally intended for inservice and preservice teachers, administrators, teacher educators, higher education professors and leaders, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the integration of UDL into strategic academic plans.

With the ever-increasing use of online learning in K-12 education, it is critically important for teachers to vary instruction to meet the wide range of individual learning styles and student diversity, whether teaching a class remotely or in person. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) makes instruction—whether in-person or virtual—more accessible for all students, and it can help teachers overcome challenges that come with remote teaching and learning. This quick-reference laminated guide provides an overview of UDL and recommends UDL strategies for providing multiple means of representation, multiple means of expression, and multiple means of engagement for students in grades K-12 who are leaning entirely virtually, in a hybrid model, or in-person. It lists best practices for incorporating UDL in English Language Arts and Mathematics, presents a UDL planning framework, and discusses other frameworks that support UDL in the classroom.

If you are interested in learning more about universal design but finding the UDL guidelines or the entire concept of learning a new model overwhelming, this book is for you! The UDL guidelines are complex, but implementing universal design for learning should not be. If you are unsure of how to "highlight patterns and critical features" in daily practice or "maximize generalization" in lessons, this book will help. Universal Design Daily translates the UDL principles, guidelines and checkpoints for you and provides 365 easy-to-implement ideas that are appropriate for elementary and secondary classrooms. This user-friendly guide was created to help educators learn more about universal design by exploring the practices associated with it. The book features dozens of ideas for providing multiple methods of engagement (e.g., creating personalized learning plans, using movement/brain breaks, engaging in community building), multiple methods of action and expression (e.g., providing assessment choices, encouraging doodling, introducing assistive technology), and multiple methods of representation (e.g., teaching with powerful visuals, introducing films and podcasts, creating costumes). Universal Design Daily also provides several suggestions to help teachers and teams "set up" for universally-designed curriculum, instruction, and learning environments. One section is dedicated to preparing students and learning spaces and one is focused on UDL-related professional development. This second edition differs from the first in that all of the teaching ideas are organized around CAST's (www.cast.org) Universal Design for Learning principles. There are ideas for every single guideline and checkpoint. This edition is also unique in that it includes new material including several suggestions for virtual classrooms and e-learning. This book is designed to support any educator who may not have the time to spend hours on the web, attend a series of workshops, or read a multi-chapter book cover-to-cover in order to plan effective and appropriately challenging lessons for the students in his or her diverse classroom. With 365 ideas to explore, you can focus on just one idea per day, flip through the pages at your own pace, or read the entire book in one sitting. You can use the book as a tool for weekly inspiration or you can keep it on your desktop as a lesson-planning reference tool. No matter how you read it or use it, Universal Design Daily is sure to provide you with important universal design know-how and a wide range of creative and inspiring ideas for your diverse K-12 school or classroom.

For courses in Universal Design and Inclusion, and a supplement for use with general and special education courses on curriculum and methods, technology, and assistive technology. This brief, supplementary text, a collaborative publication between CEC and Merrill Education, offers education professionals a conceptual framework to create flexible, equitable, and accessible instructional techniques that accommodate individual learning differences in a classroom setting. Aimed toward instructors in education classes as a means of informing current and future teachers about the basics of universal design for learning (UDL) and the ways it can be implemented in schools and classrooms, the goal of this publication is to inform teachers of the basis for effective teaching practice and to remind them of the various instructional resources available for them to create a UDL environment in their own classroom.
