Genre: Technology

The Frankenstein nature of Chernobyl's nuclear reactor is the author's main venture into contemporary technology. Kaufman-Osborn (political theory, Whitman College) symbolically explores the relationship between human beings and their creations, and how gender informs that relationship. From the title, some may expect this to be a feminist analysis. In a sense it is, elaborating upon Judith Butler's ideas in Gender Trouble that gender is imposed by norm-governed dualisms of "performativity" (what Kaufman-Osborn terms "the gender-specific forms of divided labor"). The author waxes eloquently on artifacts as agents, agents as artifacts, exemplary artifacts (shield, cyborg, and reactor), and the myths of Prometheus and Philomela' loom. A surreal new collection from an acclaimed poet Hallucinogenic plants chant in chorus. A thoughtful dog grants an interview. A caterpillar offers life advice. Amy Gerstler’s newest collection of poetry, Dearest Creature, marries fact and fiction in a menagerie of dramatic monologues, twisted love poems, and epistolary pleadings. Drawing on sources as disparate as Lewis Carroll and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, as well as abnormal psychology, etiquette, and archaeology texts, these darkly imaginative poems probe what it means to be a sentient, temporary, flesh-and-blood beast, to be hopelessly, vividly creaturely.

A revised edition followed in 1787. It was one of the most important novels in the Sturm und Drang period in German literature, and influenced the later Romantic movement. Mary Shelley’s timeless and beloved gothic novel first published in the early 19th century returns with a freshly reimagined cover for a new generation of young readers! When ambitious young scientist Victor Frankenstein animates a humanoid figure he crafted from stolen corpses, he gets more than he bargained for. While his creation is brutish—large, strong, and horrifying to look at—it’s also an intelligent, emotional, and eloquent creature who blurs the lines between monstrosity and humanity. Unable to cope with the fallout of his experiment, Victor abandons his strange creation. The lonely monster, now cast out into the world, fruitlessly seeks happiness in a world that rejects the unnatural and the ugly. And then the unthinkable happens: the monster turns against its own creator with a powerful threat, setting into motion a truly tragic series of events.
