This book presents contributions of deep technical content and high scientific quality in the areas of electromagnetic theory, scattering, UWB antennas, UWB systems, ground penetrating radar (GPR), UWB communications, pulsed-power generation, time-domain computational electromagnetics, UWB compatibility, target detection and discrimination, propagation through dispersive media, and wavelet and multi-resolution techniques. Ultra-wideband (UWB), short-pulse (SP) electromagnetics are now being used for an increasingly wide variety of applications, including collision avoidance radar, concealed object detection, and communications. Notable progress in UWB and SP technologies has been achieved by investigations of their theoretical bases and improvements in solid-state manufacturing, computers, and digitizers. UWB radar systems are also being used for mine clearing, oil pipeline inspections, archeology, geology, and electronic effects testing. Like previous books in this series, Ultra-Wideband Short-Pulse Electromagnetics 10 serves as an essential reference for scientists and engineers working in these applications areas.

Buried explosive hazards present a pressing problem worldwide. Millions of acres and thousands of sites are contaminated in the United States alone [1, 2]. There are three categories of explosive hazards: metallic, intermediate-electrical conducting (IEC), and non-conducting targets. Metallic target detection and classification by electromagnetic (EM) signature has been the subject of research for many years. Key to the success of this research is modern multi-static Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) sensors, which are able to measure the wideband EMI response from metallic buried targets. However, no hardware solutions exist which can characterize IEC and non-conducting targets. While high-conducting metallic targets exhibit a quadrature peak response for frequencies in a traditional EMI regime under 100 kHz, the response of intermediate-conducting objects manifests at higher frequencies, between 100 kHz and 15 MHz. In addition to high-quality electromagnetic sensor data and robust electromagnetic models, a classification procedure is required to discriminate Targets of Interest (TOI) from clutter. Currently, costly human experts are used for this task. This expense and effort can be spared by using statistical signal processing and machine learning. This thesis has two main parts. In the first part, we explore using the high frequency EMI (HFEMI) band (100 kHz-15 MHz) for detection of carbon fiber UXO, voids, and of materials with characteristics that may be associated with improvised explosive devices (IED). We constructed an HFEMI sensing instrument, and apply the techniques of metal detection to sensing in a band of frequencies which are the transition between the induction and radar bands. In this transition domain, physical considerations and technological issues arise that cannot be solved via the approaches used in either of the bracketing lower and higher frequency ranges. In the second half of this thesis, we present a procedure for automatic classification of UXO. For maximum generality, our algorithm is robust and can handle sparse training examples of multi-class data. This procedure uses an unsupervised starter, semi-supervised techniques to gather training data, and concludes with supervised learning until all TOI are found. Additionally, an inference method for estimating the number of remaining true positives from a partial Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve is presented and applied to live-site dig histories.

The goal of the Networking in Extreme Environments (NETEX) Program is to create a wireless networking technology that enables robust connectivity in harsh environments and support its integration into new and emerging sensor and Navigation receivers. The NETEX program is focused on the development of an improved physical layer for networked Navigations based on a family of new ultra-wideband UWB devices. UWB devices have the potential to perform a number of useful military Navigation and sensing functions that make them very appealing for warfighter applications. This report is one of a series of NETEX sponsored electromagnetic interference (EMI) test reports that detail the effects of interference from UWB transmissions on legacy military receivers. The purpose of this report is to document the results of EMI testing performed on the AN/ASN-163 and AN/PSN-11 GPS Navigation Receivers using an UWB signal generator as the potential interfering source. The AN/ASN-163 GPS Navigation Receiver is a five channel Miniaturized Airborne GPS Receiver. The AN/PSN-11 GPS Navigation Receiver is a five channel handheld GPS receiver. The report provides detailed descriptions of the UWB signal source and AN/ASN-163 and AN/PSN-11 operating modes, identifies the test methodology and test procedures and presents the results of the test events. The intent of these tests was to determine the relative susceptibility with respect to a standard RF interference signal of the AN/ASN-163 and AN/PSN-11 receivers for several of the primary operating modes of the receivers. Accordingly, a set of thirteen test waveforms were designed and injected into the receivers in order to be able to measure the interference effects. The results of the tests are presented in relative susceptibility plots and summarized in a data table.

This project focused on fast numerical modeling of ultra-wideband (UWB) electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensing of buried unexploded ordnances (UXO'S). Modeling of the "targets" (or representative clutter objects), the soil environment, and the two in combination were treated. Two example sensors were modeled specifically, one working in the frequency domain (FD), the other in the time domain (TD). The models of UXO response were extremely high fidelity, using the standardized excitations approach (SEA). This includes all effects, and all internal interactions. At the same time, the models are fast enough to use in essentially real time modeling of contemplated scenarios in which prospective signal patterns are sought over plots of ground on the order of typical survey segments. Models of the ground response include ultra-fast code that evaluate analytical solutions for responses of magnetically permeable and conductive environments to the subject instruments, with algorithms for generalization to other instruments.
