Ulster has produced an impressive number of surgeons who have gained world-wide renown. None has been more celebrated, or more deserving of a biography than Sir Ian Fraser whose life spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. Following a brillant university career, Fraser's training occupied most of the inter-war years. As with most innovatory surgeons, his career really flourished in war-time conditions. During the Second World War, he was at the forefront of the early field trials of a drug that would benefit the whole of mankind - penecillin - first, in the crucial allied victory in North Africa and then in Italy. For the courage and skill he consistently showed during during these campaigns, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1945 came his timely appointment to the surgical staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, in which he was to serve with equal distinction until his retirement in 1966. Richard Clarke's sympathetic, insightful and not uncritical biography could only have been written by someone who was taught by Fraser and who then worked alongside him. The outcome is a fascinating, and informed overall view of Sir Ian Fraser, the surgeon, the teacher, the writer and, above all, the man.

Highly Commended in the BMA Medical Book Awards 2018! Here’s what the judges said: "This is one of the few textbooks I would suggest every clinician reads.” Healthcare Economics Made Easy 2e is a clear and concise text written for healthcare professionals and students who need to understand the basics of the subject but who do not want to wade through a specialist health economics text. This new edition builds on the success of the first edition by adding new chapters which provide a comparison across several western economies, as well as a consideration of the US healthcare system. Healthcare Economics Made Easy 2e will equip the reader with the necessary skills to make valid decisions based on the economic data and with the background knowledge to understand the health economics literature. This book provides insight into the economic methods that are used to promote public health policies, the techniques used for grading and valuing evidence and the statistics relied upon, without trying to re-train the reader as a health economist. If you are left bemused by terms such as QALY, health utility analysis and cost minimisation analysis, then this is the book for you! From reviews of the first edition: “This is a clearly written and accessible introduction to health economics... This book should prove useful to all those responsible for planning and delivering health service. It is a quick read but also a useful reference for the desk.... I would commend this book as a means by which people .... can better understand both the impact of their own practice on our health economy and also appreciate the methods that are being adopted to determine clinical practice at a regional and super-regional level.” Ulster Medical Journal, 2014

Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is an essential resource for medical students who need an introduction, understanding and overview of the subject. Most competing texts either burden medical students with information they do not require, or cover rheumatology alongside orthopedics and as a result compromise fundamentals of rheumatology. This book is different - it provides all the information students need during their rheumatology placement and signposts them to where they can find further information. A definition and brief pathophysiology for each condition is provided, which is linked to the respective clinical features. The book covers the core elements of diagnosis and treatment based on the latest UK guidelines to swiftly bring students and junior doctors in training up-to-date. Self-assessment questions and an OSCE chapter provide a way of checking that users have understood and grasped the core material, as well as enabling students to be well equipped for their written and OSCE examinations. Written by two medical students and an experienced consultant rheumatologist, the book combines a reader-friendly writing style with coverage of the material through clinical experience of a professional in the field. Printed in full color throughout, with an attractive design, a clear and concise writing style as well as a range of pedagogical features including an array of mnemonics, pictures and diagrams, Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is exactly the sort of book medical students and newly qualified doctors would benefit from.
