Images of slides presented at a Texas Department of Transportation workshop. Includes findings of a three-part study (Project 0-6955) performed by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. In this study, strategies were developed to reduce uncertainty in load rating procedures to potentially remove the load postings of typical steel and concrete bridges in Texas that are posted at load levels below the legal limit. The presentation outlines several aproaches for reviewing load postings for steel and concrete bridges using refined methods, and discusses model updating, and impact of the methods on rating factors. The presentation ends with refined load rating guidelines that were developed from this study, along with load rating examples, and recommendations.

This book describes the history of this now iconic room which represents America’s space program during the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and early Space Shuttle eras. It is now a National Historic Landmark and is being restored to a level which represents the day the flight control teams walked out after the last lunar landing missions. The book is dedicated to the estimated 3,000 men and women who supported the flights and tells the story from their perspective. It describes the rooms of people supporting this control center; those rooms of engineers, analysts and scientists most people never knew about. Some called it a “shrine” and some called it a “cathedral.” Now it will be restored to its former glory and soon thousands will be able to view the place where America flew to the moon.

How to optimize educational spaces and teaching practices for more effective learning Author David Thornburg, an award-winning futurist and educational consultant, maintains that in order to engage all students, learning institutions should offer a balance of Campfire spaces (home of the lecture), Watering Holes (home to conversations between peers), Caves (places for quiet reflection), and Life (places where students can apply what they've learned). In order to effectively use technology in the classroom, prepare students for future careers, and incorporate project-based learning, all teachers should be moving from acting as the "sage on the stage" to becoming the "guide on the side." Whether you are a school administrator interested in redesigning your school or a teacher who wants to prepare better lessons, From the Campfire to the Holodeck can help by providing insight on how to: Boost student engagement Enable project-based learning Incorporate technology into the classroom Encourage student-led learning From the Campfire to the Holodeck is designed to help schools move from traditional lecture halls (Campfires) where students just receive information to schools that encourage immersive student-centered learning experiences (Holodecks).
