This book explores the relationship between electronic correlations, dimensionality, inhomogeneities, and superconductivity in low-dimensional systems by studying single crystals of the quasi-one-dimensional Na2–δMo6Se6, composed of MoSe filaments weakly coupled by Na atoms and subject to intrinsic disorder (δ > 0). It shows that the Na2-δMo6Se6 displays strong electronic correlations in its normal state, whereas a superconducting ground state emerges from Anderson localized electrons. Two novel behaviors of the superconducting state are observed: first, a disorder induced enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature; second, a reentrant phase coherence with increasing temperature, magnetic field, and current. It also analyzes the intrinsic properties of Na2-δMo6Se6 are analyzed to offer a thorough understanding of these phenomena. The emergence of superconductivity in such low-dimensional systems provides a fruitful playground to explore electronic order and correlations.

The process of realizing the ground state of some typical (frustrated) quantum many-body systems, starting from the ‘disordered’ or excited states, can be formally mapped to the search of solutions for computationally hard problems. The dynamics through the critical point, in between, are therefore extremely crucial. In the context of such computational optimization problems, the dynamics (of rapid quenching or slow annealing), while tuning the appropriate elds or uctuations, in particular while crossing the quantum critical point, are extremely intriguing and are being investigated these days intensively. Several successful methods and tricks are now well established. This volume gives a collection of introductory reviews on such developments written by well-known experts. It concentrates on quantum phase transitions and their dynamics as the transition or critical points are crossed. Both the quenching and annealing dynamics are extensively covered. We hope these timely reviews will inspire the young researchers to join and c- tribute to this fast-growing, intellectually challenging, as well as technologically demanding eld. We are extremely thankful to the contributors for their intensive work and pleasant cooperations. We are also very much indebted to Kausik Das for his help in compiling this book. Finally, we express our gratitude to Johannes Zittartz, Series Editor, LNP, and Christian Caron of physics editorial department of Springer for their encouragement and support.

This is the first volume of a comprehensive two-volume treatise on superconductivity that represents the first such publication since the earlier work by R. Parks. It systematically reviews the basic physics and recent advances in the field. Leading researchers describe the state of the art in conventional phonon-induced superconductivity, high-Tc superconductivity, and novel superconductivity. After an introduction and historical overview, the leaders in the special fields of research give a comprehensive survey of the basics and the state of the art in chapters covering the entire field of superconductivity, including conventional and unconventional superconductors. Important new results are reported in a manner intended to stimulate further research. Numerous illustrations, diagrams and tables make this book especially useful as a reference work for students, teachers, and researchers. The second volume treats novel superconductors.

The importance of phonons has long been recognized by research ers in nonequilibrium superconductivity. Similarly, experimentalists studying phonons at low temperatures have relied heavily on supercon ductors as sources and detectors. To a large extent this symbiotic relationship has developed with a general mutual awareness; however, to our knowledge these subjects have never been treated together in conferences or study institutes. It was with the hope of further contributing to the awareness and communication between workers in these areas that this NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) has been conceived. A second, but equally important, reason for holding this ASI is to fill a void by providing the first general textbook in this important area of physics. Therefore, there was an emphasis on the tutorial nature of the lectures and written contributions to this textbook. It should not go unnoticed that the experimental and theoretical concepts covered in this textbook are of paramount importance to the various applications of superconductors. Almost by definition, the use of a superconductor implies a nonequilibrium state! For example, phonon conduction to the helium bath is important in devices ranging from microscopic Josephson junctions to large scale magnets and transmission lines. Knowledge of the more fundamental nonequilibrium effects can aid in our understanding of devices as well as provide the potential for entirely new applications.

This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory of d-wave superconductivity, focused on d-wave pairing symmetry and its physical consequences in the superconducting state. It discusses the basic concepts and methodologies related to high-temperature superconductivity and compares experimental phenomena with theoretical predictions. After a brief introduction to the basic theory of superconductivity and several models for high-temperature superconductivity, this book presents detailed derivations and explanations for various single-particle and collective properties of d-wave superconductors that can be monitored experimentally, including thermodynamics, angular-resolved photo-emission, single-particle and Josephson tunnelling, impurity scattering, magnetic and superfluid responses, transport and optical properties and mixed states. Various universal behaviours of d-wave superconductors are highlighted. Aimed primarily at graduate students and research scientists in condensed matter and materials physics, this text enables readers to understand systematically the physical properties of high-temperature superconductors.
