A shell-shocked veteran. A shattered child. A Christmas miracle. It’s Christmas in 1953 on the dusty High Plains of West Texas. It was lonely enough out there before eleven-year-old Bonnie McGrath lost her mother. Now she aches for her daddy’s return from Korea to fill the emptiness that’s been carved out of her heart ever since Mama’s passing. But the father who left Muleshoe, Texas, three years before has come home as somebody else. After nineteen months in a North Korean prisoner-of-war camp, Beau McGrath has lost the ability to love. A New Mexican blizzard claims the county’s Christmas trees, and the loss is devastating. A symbol of all the good in Bonnie’s life that has been taken away and is now gone forever. Beau must replace the trees, but his only solution takes him even farther away from his daughter. Will the chasm between them grow wide enough that neither of them will ever be able to cross it again?

A vast number of studies have documented the economic and geological effects of oil production, but the impact of boom-and-bust cycles on individuals and communities has received less attention. Boom or Bust remedies this gap by highlighting the personal experiences of those directly affected in an economy dominated by oil and natural gas production. The Permian Basin is one of the largest oil-producing regions in the United States. People who live there have benefited from explosive growth, only to see opportunities vanish with sudden industry downturns. In 2016, the National Endowment for the Humanities funded a grant for the study and collection of energy narratives in this economically volatile region. Boom or Bust derives from that community initiative and offers a unique contribution to the developing field of energy humanities. The oil-field industry may seem to be all about numbers, but as Boom or Bust demonstrates, residents of oil-and-gas country, whether they work in the oil field or not, are at the mercy of an ever-shifting economy. When the price of oil rises, companies move in and newcomers flood the area, expanding the employment force. And as the population booms, so does the infrastructure of cities. When prices drop, though, families must make difficult choices: whether to stay put or follow the oil to another location. With the ensuing declines in population, small businesses close their doors and unemployment levels rise. Despite the inevitable declines and despite the increase in alternative energy resources, many West Texans feel a sense of pride that borders on patriotism. Boom or Bust reveals the full complexity of boomtown culture.

Celebrate the holidays with two popular McKettrick tales by #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller—the Queen of Western Romance! A Lawman’s Christmas It’s 1914, and the sudden death of the town marshal leaves Blue River, Texas, without a lawman…and Dara Rose Nolan without a husband. A cowboy at heart, Clay McKettrick plans to start a ranch and finally settle down. He isn’t interested in uprooting Dara Rose and her children, but he is interested in offering her protection, friendship—and passion. And when they say "I do" to a marriage of convenience, the temporary lawman’s Christmas wish is to make Dara Rose his permanent wife… An Outlaw’s Christmas Sawyer McKettrick isn’t ready to settle down on the Triple M family ranch in Arizona. So, in 1915, he heads to Blue River, Texas, to seek a job as marshal. But he’s injured in a blinding snowstorm—and collapses into the arms of a prim and proper lady in calico. The shirtless, bandaged stranger recuperating in teacher Piper St. James’s room behind the schoolhouse says he’s a McKettrick, but he looks like an outlaw to her. As they wait out the storm, the handsome loner has Piper remembering long-ago dreams of marriage and motherhood. But how long is Sawyer willing to call Blue River home?
