It is 1812 in Sapoda, a small crossroads town nestled in the neutral zone between the New Roman and Mongol Empires. Mikail de Reuter, a young political officer bored by his job and worried about his prospects, is only there to visit his girl. But Mongol cavalry looking to clear a path for an invasion come to kill him. He knows he has been betrayed and runs for his life. In New Rome Emperor Charles Martel IV has had to contend with many enemies just to keep Charlemagne’s crown on his head—and that head on his shoulders. So far he has managed to hold things together. In Mikail’s story he glimpses an enormous treasonable conspiracy years in building. As the Emperor begins a frantic hunt for them, the conspirators realize that unless they strike first they will soon be dead. True Successor is a fast-moving good read and a trip to a fascinating New Rome for Alternate History buffs. Like Mikail we live briefly in that city and meet and hear not only the great men of the realm, but young lovers, clerks, soldiers and ordinary men and women shopping, drinking in its taverns and walking its streets.

"This, Ismail Kadare's most recent novel, is a fictional inquiry into the still-unexplained death of Mehmet Shehu, the man who for decades was the designated Number Two political figure in Communist dictator Enver Hoxha's ironfisted and increasingly paranoid regime." "On the night of December 13, 1981, the so-called Successor was shot dead, sometime between midnight and early morning. Did he commit suicide or was he murdered? This is the burning question. There are a number of potential murderers: the architect in charge of renovating the Successor's new quarters, who knew of the secret underground passage to his home; a rising political figure, Adrian Hasobeu, who if the current successor were to disappear would surely be named Number Two; the dictator himself - known to his countrymen as the Guide - now ailing and almost blind, unable to countenance even the idea of being replaced; and, incredibly, the Successor's wife." "The Successor combines a tantalizing mystery with a historical novel (Who killed Mehmet Shehu?), a psychological examination (How do you live in a world where nothing is sure?), and an analysis of a dictatorship so repressive that its followers treat it as a religious faith, where love, and indeed all personal relations, are subject to the whims and demands of the state."--BOOK JACKET.

Structure is a central theme of construction, of interest to both engineers and architects; this book on architectural structures aims to facilitate the dialogue between these two professions. The chapters are organized into a progressive, step-by-step analysis of increasing complexity - a structural path - stressing an intuitive approach and conveying with diagrams and simple equations the requirements behind the dimensioning of all types of structures employed in construction. This approach is particularly useful for students, providing them with an intuitive understanding of form and function, as well as the insight to make their designs more sensible, coherent and elegant. "The art of structures" has been written for architects, civil engineers and construction professionals, and for all those need to acquire an intuitive and practical approach to the design and appropriate dimensioning of load bearing structures.

ISBN:

In his latest work, "ISLAM & THE QURAN: Examining the Quran & Islamic Teachings," renowned scholar Edward D. Andrews delves into the intricacies of one of the world's most influential religions. This comprehensive study is an exploration of Islam, the Quran, and their impact on our world. Starting with the history of Islam, Andrews expertly traces the path from Muhammad's calling to the diverse, global community that follows this faith today. By investigating the role of the Quran, along with the hadiths and Islamic law, Andrews seeks to understand Islam's principles and the interpretations that have shaped its practices over time. The book further examines the Islamic teachings, the concept of abrogation, and the much-debated topic of Jihad. It critiques the teachings that contradict biblical texts and navigates through controversial areas with a scholarly precision that respects the sensitivity of the subject matter. In an analysis of the Quran, Andrews investigates its authenticity and supposed 'miracle.' Is it truly a divine revelation, or does it stem from human conception? He contrasts Quranic interpretation of Jesus and other biblical figures with those in the Bible, unravelling historical and archaeological validation of the scriptures along the way. From evaluating the Quran's internal harmony to understanding the meaning of Jihad, the book digs deep into the heart of Islam. It touches upon the various Muslim sects, their religious practices, and provides a comprehensive look at the punishment for apostasy in Islam. In addressing frequent Muslim criticisms against the New Testament, Andrews not only defends biblical accuracy but also delves into a detailed analysis of Bible difficulties, offering practical procedures for resolving them. Closing with an insightful examination of Islamic eschatology and the Nation of Islam and its unique beliefs, the book provides a glossary of technical terms and a bibliography for further study.

The 33rd Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2010) took place at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, September 21–24, 2010, under the motto “Anthropomatic Systems.” In this volume you will ?nd the keynote paper and 49 papers of oral and poster presentations. The papers were selected from 73 submissions, resulting in an acceptance rate of 67%. As usual at the KI conferences, two entire days were allocated for targeted workshops—seventhis year—andone tutorial. The workshopand tutorialma- rials are not contained in this volume, but the conference website, www.ki2010.kit.edu,will provide information and references to their contents. Recent trends in AI research have been focusing on anthropomatic systems, which address synergies between humans and intelligent machines. This trend is emphasized through the topics of the overall conference program. They include learning systems, cognition, robotics, perception and action, knowledge rep- sentation and reasoning, and planning and decision making. Many topics deal with uncertainty in various scenarios and incompleteness of knowledge. Summarizing, KI 2010 provides a cross section of recent research in modern AI methods and anthropomatic system applications. We are very grateful that Jos ́ edel Mill ́ an, Hans-Hellmut Nagel, Carl Edward Rasmussen, and David Vernon accepted our invitation to give a talk.

Vagueness and Contradiction

Vagueness and Contradiction

Did Buddha become a fat man in one second? Is there a tallest short giraffe? Epistemicists answer 'Yes!' They believe that any predicate that divides things divides them sharply. They solve the ancient sorites paradox by picturing vagueness as a kind of ignorance. The alternative solutions are radical. They either reject classical theorems or inference rules or reject our common sense view of what can exist. Epistemicists spare this central portion of our web of belief by challenging peripheral intuitions about the nature of language. So why is this continuation of the status quo so incredible? Why do epistemicists themselves have trouble believing their theory? In Vagueness and Contradiction Roy Sorensen traces our incredulity to linguistic norms that build upon our psychological tendencies to round off insignificant differences. These simplifying principles lead to massive inconsistency, rather like the rounding off errors of calculators with limited memory. English entitles speakers to believe each 'tolerance conditional' such as those of the form 'If n is small, then n + 1 is small.' The conjunction of these a priori beliefs entails absurd conditionals such as 'If 1 is small, then a billion is small.' Since the negation of this absurdity is an a priori truth, our a priori beliefs about small numbers are jointly inconsistent. One of the tolerance conditionals, at the threshold of smallness, must be an analytic falsehood that we are compelled to regard as a tautology. Since there are infinitely many analytic sorites arguments, Sorensen concludes that we are obliged to believe infinitely many contradictions. These contradictions are not specifically detectable. They are ineliminable, like the heat from a light bulb. Although the light bulb is not designed to produce heat, the heat is inevitably produced as a side-effect of illumination. Vagueness can be avoided by representational systems that make no concession to limits of perception, or memory, or testimony. But quick and rugged representational systems, such as natural languages, will trade 'rationality' for speed and flexibility. Roy Sorensen defends epistemicism in his own distinctive style, inventive and amusing. But he has some serious things to say about language and logic, about the way the world is and about our understanding of it.

"Modern Compiler Design" makes the topic of compiler design more accessible by focusing on principles and techniques of wide application. By carefully distinguishing between the essential (material that has a high chance of being useful) and the incidental (material that will be of benefit only in exceptional cases) much useful information was packed in this comprehensive volume. The student who has finished this book can expect to understand the workings of and add to a language processor for each of the modern paradigms, and be able to read the literature on how to proceed. The first provides a firm basis, the second potential for growth.
