Excerpt from Tropical America IN making the circuit of Tropical America described in these pages I was received with uniform kindness by the representatives of the United States Government in nearly all the capitals and ports which I visited. It is at once a duty and a pleasure to acknowledge their hospitality and aid, while it would be manifestly im proper to hold them responsible in any degree for the Opinions expressed in this volume. By introducing me to well-informed men and by many other courtesies they greatly facilitated my investigation of political and commercial conditions. I may at least express gratefully my pressing obligations to Consul Baker, of Buenos Ayres to the American Ministers in Lima, Caracas, and Mexico; to consul-general Adamson in Panama; and to consul-general Williams in Havana. I have also to thank Mr. Charles R. Flint and Mr. Irving King of New York for their courtesy in providing photographs for four of the illustrations. Excerpt from Pioneers in Tropical America I have tried, in describing these adventures, to give my readers some idea of the scenery, animals, and vegetation of the new lands through which these pioneers passed on their great and small purposes; as 'well as of the people, native to the soil, with whom they came in contact. And in treating of these subjects I have thought it best to give the scientific names of the plant or animal which was of importance in my story, so that any of my readers who were really interested in natural history could at once ascertain for themselves the exact type alluded to, and, if they wished, look it up in a museum, a garden, or a natural history book. Excerpt from The Adaptability of the White Man to Tropical America I case arises from the unequal distribution of the rainfall dur ing the various seasons of the year. For instance, portions of the vast grassy plains, or Llanos, of the Orinoco Valley are almost impassable at certain seasons, because they are flooded by the heavy equatorial rains. Yet, during the long dry season, which here prevails during our winter months, those same plains become so dry that in many places it is impossible to get water except by digging deep wells. The difficulties which here confront agriculture are so great that the native races have never succeeded in surmounting them. In fact before the introduction of cattle, agriculture was quite impossible for another and wholly different reason. There was no means of breaking up the sod, which is an essential prerequisite, if crops are to be raised. Even the white man has found agriculture so difficult that he has rarely attempted it, and has utilized the plains only for cattle raising. This also is beset with many difficulties, because of the superfluous supply of water and mud at some seasons, and the drought at others. In still other regions, although a fairly dense growth of jungle covers the ground, the water supply presents a serious difficulty, for during the long dry season most of the springs disappear; hence deep wells are necessary and these are a difficult matter for prim itive people, not well equipped with iron tools. This, it is true, has little direct influence upon the white man, but indirectly, as we shall soon see, it adds its quota to his difficulties. Excerpt from Tropical Touches: Songs From South America I've tried to write of matters which I've pondered, Of stories I've heard told - of men I've met. Of distant lands, where oft I've lonely wandered And scenes which I've beheld, ne'er to forget. I've tried to tell of living as I've known it, Nor do my rhymes abound in polished speech, Yet, for all gringos, though they may not own it, Past mem'ries they'll recall. a lesson teach. And should you o'er one word of mine detain Then has this work of love been not in vain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Gymnotid Eels of Tropical America Subsequently all of the Gymnotidae collected by Mr. John D. Haseman of the Carnegie Museum Expedition to Central South America were received for study. As these collections contained several new species and specimens of many little known species, a revision of the entire family was begun. Mr. Haseman visited many new localities, and his collections were of particular value in the study of the geographical distribution of these fishes. Excerpt from Mosquito or Man?: The Conquest of the Tropical World What has been written in this volume in connec tion with yellow fever in Central and South America and in the West Indies holds equally good for West Africa. If West Africa will grapple with the problem in the same business-like way in which the West Indies, Central and South America have done, there is no doubt that yellow fever will be banished from the Coast; and that in consequence one at least of the causes of mortality in that hitherto unsavoury part of the world will disappear.
