Between June 6-10, 1988, the Third Chemical Congress of North America was held at the Toronto Convention Center. At this rare gathering, fifteen thousand scientists attended various symposia. In one of the symposia, Professor Pierre-Gilles de Gennes of College de France was honored as the 1988 recipient of the Amer ican Chemical Society Polymer Chemistry Award, sponsored by Mobil Chemical Corporation. For Professor de Gennes, this international setting could not be more fitting. For years, he has been a friend and a lecturer to the world scientific community. Thus, for this special occasion, his friends came to recount many of his achievements or report new research findings mostly derived from his theories or stimulated by his thoughts. In this volume of Proceedings, titled New Trends in Physics and Physical Chemistry of Polymers, we are glad to present the revised papers for the Symposium and some contributed after the Symposium. In addition, we intend to include most of the lively discussions that took plaGe during the conference. This volume contains a total of thirty-six papers divided into six parts, primarily according to the nature of the subject matter: • Adsorption of Colloids and Polymers. • Adhesion, Fractal and Wetting of Polymers. • Dynamics and Characterization of Polymer Solutions. • Diffusion and Interdiffusion of Polymers. • Entanglement and Reptation of Polymer Melts and Networks. • Phase Transitions and Gel Electrophoresis.

Modern Methods for Theoretical Physical Chemistry of Biopolymers provides an interesting selection of contributions from an international team of researchers in theoretical chemistry. This book is extremely useful for tackling the complicated scientific problems connected with biopolymers' physics and chemistry. The applications of both the classical molecular-mechanical and molecular-dynamical methods and the quantum chemical methods needed for bridging the gap to structural and dynamical properties dependent on electron dynamics are explained. Also included are ways to deal with complex problems when all three approaches need to be considered at the same time. The book gives a rich spectrum of applications: from theoretical considerations of how ATP is produced and used as 'energy currency' in the living cell, to the effects of subtle solvent influence on properties of biopolymers and how structural changes in DNA during single-molecule manipulation may be interpreted.· Presents modern successes and trends in theoretical physical chemistry/chemical physics of biopolymers· Topics covered are of relevant importance to rapidly developing areas in science such as nanotechnology and molecular medicine· Quality selection of contributions from renowned scientists in the field

The growth of inorganic chemistry during the last 50 years has made it difficult for the student to assimilate all the factual information available. This book is designed to help by showing how a chemist uses the Periodic Table to organize and process this mass of information. It includes a detailed discussion of the important horizontal, vertical, and diagonal trends in the properties of the atoms of the elements and their compounds. These basic principles can then be applied to more detailed problems in modern inorganic chemistry.

Ecological Physical Chemistry is a new transdisciplinary field concerned, on one hand, with the study of the interactions between complex molecular systems and, on the other, with a systemic approach to the overall biosphere. This book encompasses the views of scientists involved in the study of some of the planet's major biological, ecological and environmental problems in order to offer an overview of recently developed methods for studying the complexity of these concerns at every level, from molecular to social organization. The volume deals with computational modeling on: the relationship between molecular structure, dynamics and signal transduction in biological systems; the influence of the surroundings on reactions; the relationships between molecular structure and biological activity, as well as experimental methodologies for studying the interaction of DNA with small and large molecules. It also discusses the problems arising from the need to develop new thermodynamic theories and models in order to continue the analysis of natural processes and their effects on living systems and the environment. The final section describes the key points involved in the process of realizing sustainable patterns of economic elaboration and development, specifically the roles of the limits determined by thermodynamic, natural resources, pollution absorption, population tolerance levels and, most importantly, those of our understanding about where these limits lie and how they influence the systems.

In this collection, the author has compiled a set of his papers representing some of the highlights of materials chemistry. It features a section on oxidic materials, which includes high-temperature superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, electronic phase separation and multiferroics. The author has also included novel methods for making gallium nitride, boron nitride and such materials, by using precursors and the urea decomposition route. Moreover, there is a section dealing with open-framework and hybrid materials of which the latter has a great future since one can make use of the rigidity of inorganic structures and the functionality and flexibility of the organic residues to design materials with novel properties.
