In 1976, data on commercial timberland area were compiled for each State by owner class for 1952, 1962, and 1970; data for 1977 were estimated. Information on changes in land use was gathered for each State, and the literature was reviewed. Preliminary projections of changes in commercial timberland area included 1977 - 2030 for other public, forest industry, and farm and miscellaneous private ownership. These projections were sent to Renewable Resource Evaluation units at usda Forest Service Experiment Stations for review and comment.
