The 14th Conference of the European Colloid and Interface Society (ECIS 2000) was held in September 2000, in Patras, GREECE. Researchers from the academia and the industrial sector met and presented research work divided in nine thematic sections: molecular interactions in thin films, polymer-surfactant interactions, structure and dynamics at interfaces, biocolloids, colloids in pharmaceutical and biological applications, new trends in colloid and interface science techniques, rheology, self assembly of amphiphiles and measurements in concentrated suspensions. Selected contributions from these thematic areas are presented in the present volume and show the up today achievements of the Colloid and Interface Science.

Proceedings of the First European and Interface Society meeting held in Como, Italy, September 1987. The book is divided into three main sections: colloids, amphiphile solutions and interfaces. As is typical in this field, most of the 100 contributions (half presented as abstracts) are on the borderline between physics and chemistry (and sometimes biology). Among the topics covered: colloidal dispersions, colloidal semiconductors, fractal aggregates, micelles, microemulsions, lyotropic phases, biological amphiphiles. © Springer-Verlag 2008 rd 43 Biennial Meeting of the German Colloid Society rd This volume containsselected paperspresented at the 43 Biennial Meeting of the German Colloid Society held at the Schloß Waldthausen near Mainz, October 8–10, 2007. The meeting’s emphasis was given to “Surface and Interfacial Forces – From Fundamentals to Applications” but also provided a general overview on current aspects of colloid and polymer science in fundamental research and applications. The contributions in this volume are representative of the richness of research topics in colloid and polymer science. They cover a broad eld including the application of scanning probe techniques to colloid and interface science, surface induced ordering, novel developments in amphiphilic systems as well as the synthesis and applications of nano-colloids. The meeting brought together people from different elds of colloid, polymer, and materials science and provided the platform for dialogue between scientists from universities, industry, and research institutions.

This volume of Progress in Colloid and Polymer Science assembles original contributions and invited reviews from the priority research program "Intelligent Hydrogels", funded by the German Science Foundation DFG since 2006, with about 25 contributing research groups. In the center of interest of this program and the present book are responsive hydrogels, i.e. hydrophilic polymer or polyelectrolyte networks that are able to respond to environmental stimuli such as changes in temperature, pH, additive concentration or electrical field. The activities focus on different aspects: on hydrogel synthesis, on the modeling and simulation of thermophysical hydrogel properties, as well as on innovative new hydrogel applications as smart materials. The present book summarizes the highlights in the results of the priority program in original contributions and invited reviews.
