Some days are just like fairy tales. You wake up a normal teenager in NYC, but by dinner time you find out you're a fairy princess. Meckenzie Desmond's life took that turn as she and her triplet brother and sister find out that their mother, who disappeared when they were ten, is the fairy queen and they are meant to rule the world of Aquanis. Like every fairy tale, there is an evil lurking in the shadows to make sure there is no happily ever after.

The lands and waters of the Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) have changed significantly since before the 16th century when the Susquehannock lived in the area. Much has changed since Captain John Smith penetrated the estuaries and rivers during the early 17th century; since the surveying of the Mason-Dixon Line to settle border disputes among Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware during the middle of the 18th century; and since J. Thomas Scharf described the physiographic setting of Baltimore County in the late 19th century. As early as 1881, Scharf provides us with an assessment of the condition of the aquatic ecosystems of the region, albeit in narrative form, and already changes are taking place – the conversion of forests to fields, the founding of towns and cities, and the depletion of natural resources. We have always conducted our work with the premise that “man” is part of, and not apart from, this ecosystem and landscape. This premise, and the historical changes in our landscape, provide the foundation for our overarching research question: how do human activities impact the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and the ecosystem services that they provide, and how can we optimize this relationship?

Seventh Catalog of the Vascular Plants of Ohio

Seventh Catalog of the Vascular Plants of Ohio

Publisher: Ohio State University Press
Total Pages: 220
Release: 2001
Genre: History
ISBN: 9780814208588

Scientific study of Ohio's plant life began in the late eighteenth century, and the first catalog of Ohio's vascular plants was published in 1860. The most recent catalog, published in 1932, has understandably become outdated. Now Tom S. Cooperrider and his co-authors, Barbara K. Andreas, Allison W. Cusick, Guy L Denny, John V. Freudenstein, and John J. Furlow, provide a comprehensive, modern reference covering the Ohio vascular flora. Including two thorough indexes -- one to scientific names, one to common names -- this user-friendly book will be invaluable for conservation and environmental workers in Ohio and surrounding states.
