Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Complete Short Stories" is a literary masterpiece that showcases his unique style of dark romanticism and exploration of themes such as sin, guilt, and the supernatural. Each story is expertly crafted with intricate symbolism and moral ambiguity, making it a thought-provoking read that delves into the complexities of the human psyche. The collection includes classics like "The Minister's Black Veil" and "Young Goodman Brown", providing a comprehensive look at Hawthorne's narrative prowess and thematic depth within the short story genre. This illustrated edition enhances the reader's experience by visually capturing the haunting atmosphere of Hawthorne's tales. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a prominent American author of the 19th century, drew inspiration from his Puritan heritage and fascination with the human condition to create his gripping narratives. His background in Transcendentalism and his own personal struggles with guilt and sin heavily influenced his writing, giving his stories a profound and introspective quality. Hawthorne's ability to interweave moral ambiguity with poetic prose sets him apart as a literary giant of his time. I highly recommend "Complete Short Stories" to readers who enjoy thought-provoking literature that explores the darker aspects of human nature. Hawthorne's masterful storytelling and captivating themes make this collection a must-read for anyone interested in delving into the complexities of the human experience.

Every man walks with a shadow . . . but what happens when he acquires a second one? Just ask Brazos—a dead ringer for Jack Palance who’s a cold-blooded killer for hire with blood on his hands and a posse on his tail. Desperate for cash, Brazos accepts $200 to gun down a local man named Brant. He’ll earn every penny . . . but in the end there’ll be the devil to pay. Because to put a bullet in Brant means putting one in his partner as well—an eerie stranger schooled in the black art of witchcraft. This is one killing that brings with it a deadly curse—and a second shadow. As Brazos is about to discover, the Wild West doesn’t get any wilder than when a man is damned to live—and die—in the Shadows from Boot Hill. A note from L. Ron Hubbard, written many years ago, that could as well be addressed to you, today’s reader: “Dear Range Boss: Four million of my words have been published in fifty different magazines. . . . Just now I’m larruping fantasy fiction more than anything else, though I’ve been writing Westerns for some time, too. Hope your readers like Shadows from Boot Hill. The Old West was superstitious in the extreme and . . . reeks with more fantasy than The Arabian Nights.” Also includes the Western adventures The Gunner from Gehenna, in which a plot to steal a miner’s gold reveals how a good man can go bad . . . and a bad man can do good, and Gunman!, the story of an aging gunfighter turned lawman who shows his town what a real man is made of. “A minor masterpiece.” —author Will Murray

This book looks at the affective-cognitive roots of how the human mind inquires into the workings of nature and, more generally, how the mind confronts reality. Reality is an infinitely complex system, in virtue of which the mind can comprehend it only in bits and pieces, by making up interpretations of the myriads of signals received from the world by way of integrating those with information stored from the past. This constitutes a piecemeal interpretation by which we assemble our phenomenal reality. In perceiving the complex world and responding to it, the mind invokes the logic of affect and the logic of reason, the former mostly innate and implicit, and the latter generated consciously in explicit terms with reference to mind-independent relations between entities in nature. It is a strange combination of affect and reason that enables us to make decisions and inferences, --- the latter mostly of the inductive type --- thereby making possible the development of theories. Theories are our tool-kits for explaining and predicting phenomena, guiding us along in our journey in life. Theories, however, are defeasible, and need to be constantly updated, at times even radically. In this, the self and the soul are of enormous relevance. The former is the affect-based psychological engine driving all our mental processes, while the latter is the capacity of the conscious mind to examine and reconstruct the self by modulating repressed conflicts. If the soul remains inoperative, all our theories become misdirected and a rot spreads inexorably all around us.
