IN 1985, A MAN BOARDED A BOAT with his wife and three youngest children. He was hoping to follow his six older children in escaping a Vietnam he no longer recognized. His six older children had already fled to freedom, and it was time to join them in what would surely be a better life. A perilous ocean lay between him and a reunion with the rest of his family―between all of them and freedom―but it wasn’t meant to be. Along with his youngest daughter, the man drowned when the ship went down. God wanted to take his soul, but he begged God to let him remain between life and death, unable to bear leaving his bereaved family. He wanted his soul to drift among his surviving wife and children to continue to love and to protect them. God granted his wish. This is his story.

The year is 999 A.D. Christians in Europe are preparing themselves for the arrival of the Messiah at the millennium and religious fervour is in the air. Sailing from the North African port of Tangier to a small, distant town called Paris are a Jewish merchant, Ben Attar, his two beloved wives and his Arab partner, Abu Lutfi. They have come for a meeting with their third partner the widower, Raphael Abulafia who has been forced to turn his back on their previous trading partnership because of his new wife's distrust of the dual marriage of Ben Attar. The latter turns this annual trading voyage into a personal quest to legitimise his second wife, restore his honour and, equally important, to show others the richness and humanity in his way of life. A confrontation ensues between people of different cultures whose ways of living and loving are so different, and yet who are of the same religion, believe in the same God and in the same morality. Thus we enter a profound human drama whose moral conflicts of fidelity and desire resonate deeply with our times. A. B. Yehoshua has imaginatively recreated a medieval world with its merchant trade in great depth and sensuous detail. His evocation of one man's love is lyrical, erotic even, and A Journey to the End of the Millennium will rank with the best of Yehoshua's work.

History books and novels are filled with stories of young men and women going off to war. In each, the experiences and challenges are as varied as the people themselves. The stories tell of leaders and followers, cowards and heroes. In Wheres Charlie? author Tim Soyars narrates his own story of how he came of age while serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War. In this memoir, Soyars tells how his personality, background, and attitude contributed to his will to succeed and his desire to be involved in the Vietnam War. As a boy, he always knew hed serve his country. With both humor and sincerity, Soyars narrates his storyhis birth in Virginia in 1945, his induction into the army in 1965, his marriage in 1966, and his one-year service in Vietnam with the First Calvary from March of 1967 to 1968. Most people dream about visiting many of the exotic locations and cultures they have seen in films or on TV. We often have a desire to actually visit these places and find out first-hand how others live out their day-to-day lives. Too often these dreams are out-of-sight for the average person. Unfortunately these opportunities are rare and usually they are fulfilled by a 1-2 week package tour of several famous locations. Very few people have the luxury of sufficient free time to travel among the common people of any land and learn directly from them. When I decided to travel to many parts of the world I was at the enviable stage of life where I had finished college, completed my military commitment and was still unmarried. Thus, I planned to spend a significant amount of time in as many countries as I could. My intention was to meet average citizens and live their lifestyle while with them. Of course, this would require learning their language to a conversational degree for which we residents of the USA have a poor reputation. High school French and college German gave me a start and I would learn other languages as I went thanks to the patience of so many new friends. This approach led me to being welcomed into numerous families everywhere I went. Thus, did I have the extraordinary privilege of becoming part of so many families wherein I would learn their culture from the most valid source. When I now think back to this incredible journey I am humbled by the open hospitality of so many new friends who often had little to spare, but shared it with joy and pleasure. For those who might not have the privilege that I had, I wish to attempt to convey the wonder of this world journey through this book. I invite the reader to share my varied adventures with our fellow citizens of this beautiful planet. Enjoy.

In March 1941, Virginia Woolf filled her pockets with stones and drowned herself in England’s River Ouse. Her body was found three weeks later. What seemed like a tragic ending at the time was, in fact, just the beginning of a mystery. . . . Six decades after Virginia Woolf’s death, landscape designer Jo Bellamy has come to Sissinghurst Castle for two reasons: to study the celebrated White Garden created by Woolf’s lover Vita Sackville-West and to recover from the terrible wound of her grandfather’s unexplained suicide. In the shadow of one of England’s most famous castles, Jo makes a shocking find: Woolf’s last diary, its first entry dated the day after she allegedly killed herself. If authenticated, Jo’s discovery could shatter everything historians believe about Woolf’s final hours. But when the Woolf diary is suddenly stolen, Jo’s quest to uncover the truth will lead her on a perilous journey into the tumultuous inner life of a literary icon whose connection to the White Garden ultimately proved devastating. Rich with historical detail, The White Garden is an enthralling novel of literary suspense that explores the many ways the past haunts the present–and the dark secrets that lurk beneath the surface of the most carefully tended garden.
