The drawings for the plates were executed by a near relative, from very rough sketches of my own, assisted by description. The outline of the map is taken from Mr. Arrowsmith's large map of South America; and the names and situations of some places are corrected, and others are inserted from my own knowledge. The plan of the har bour of Pernambuco was furnished to me by an English gentleman resident at Recife, who is indefatigable in the search of what ever may contribute to the increase of. Excerpt from Sketches of Residence and Travels in Brazil, Vol. 1 of 2: Embracing Historical and Geographical Notices of the Empire and Its Several Provinces Hitherto no work exclusively on Brazil, has issued from the American press. Respecting no other country of equal extent and importance, are our means of information so limited. Among English books on that country, there are none of very recent date; nor is there any one, the writer of which personally visited more than two or three of the eighteen provinces of the Empire. Excerpt from Sketches of Residence and Travels in Brazil, Vol. 2 of 2: Embracing Historical and Geographical Notices of the Empire and Its Several Provinces Some years ago the English frigate Thetis, bound homeward at the expiration of a cruise in the Pacific, was wrecked upon Cape Frio. This vessel, on leaving the harbor of Rio where she had touched, had en countered foul weather. After struggling against it till it was presumed she had cleared the coast, she bore away on her course. The darkness of the night was impenetrable, and the wind being strong, the ship was running eight or ten knots an hour, when, without the slightest warning or apprehension of danger by any one on board, she dashed upon this rocky bulwark. The officers and crew, in the shock and consternation of the moment, had barely time to transfer themselves to contiguous portions of the promontory, before the shi vered frigate went to the bottom. Most of those on board were saved by being drawn, and by drawing themselves up, on shelves of the rock out of the reach of the waves, where, in the most constrained position, they were forced to remain throughout the dismal night. I have frequently conversed with a person who was a midshipman on board the Thetis at the time, but upon whom the horrors of that dreadful scene made such an impression, as to cause him to abandon the ocean from that day forward, not even returning to his native land. A good light-house has since been con structed upon Cape Frio, which at the present time renders the approach of the navigator nearly as safe by night as it is by day. Excerpt from Travels in Brazil, Vol. 2 of 2 Among the visitors at the Vicarage was J 0am Ribeiro Pessoa de Mello Montenegro, professor of drawing to the seminary of Olinda, and the friend and disciple of Dr. Manoel Arruda da Camara. This priest, during his stay at Itama raca, crossed over to the mainland to say mass at the village of Camboa every Sunday and holi day. I accompanied him ou one of these occa sions, and we were paddled over in a canoe. We entered the cottage of a man of colour, the chief person of the place; a hammock was hanging in the room, and into this my compa nion threw himself, and three or four children of the house quickly came to him, one or two of whom he took into the hammock to play with. The females made their appearance to greet him upon his arrival; he was a favourite seem ingly with all parties, great and small. Indeed I never met with any one who possessed more pleasing manners. He is generally beloved wherever he is known, but by the lower orders of people more especially, he is quite adored. I was long acquainted with him, both before and after the time of which I speak, and Inever heard him make use of a harsh word to any one; his manner and his tones of voice always indicated that goodness in him greatly pred0. Excerpt from Travels in Brazil, in the Years 1817-1820, Vol. 1: Undertaken by Command of His Majesty the King of Bavaria Immense countries in America, formerly belonging to the crowns of Spain and Portugal, so powerfully claims the attention of the politician, the statesman, and the merchant, no more can be required to recommend a work like that here offered to the public, than the assurance that it is not a mere compilation, got up to meet the exigencres of the moment, but a real and authentic narrative, of a journey through a great extent of a most interest ing country, hitherto but imperfectly, or not at all explored, and performed by persons every way 'qualified to gather ample materials for both instruction and entertainment. That such a feeling is very general may be inferred from the numerous works that have been published of late years relating to different parts of South America. In exploring this vast continent, peculiar merit belongs to the Germans, to whom the illustrious name of Von Humboldt alone, secures, without dispute, the palm of superiority.
