Excerpt from Impressions of a Careless Traveler Made to me several years ago I have adopted as the motto for the six months' vacation trip in Europe which I have decided to take. I shall leave my books and my pen at home. I will only take writing material sufficient for an occasional letter to friends, and not a great deal even of that. I will not study art, or archi tecture, or politics, or literature; not even the geography of the lands I visit, nor the manners and customs of the people. I will not observe; I will only see what chance and inclination combine to put before my eyes; nor reflect on what I see, unless idle musing on pleasant scenes may be dignified by the term reflection. For these six months I will take the harness off my mind alto gether, and let it run at will in new pastures. I will be conscientiously idle. The itinerary we have selected gives excellent opportunity for such idle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Naples was conventionally the southernmost stop of the Grand Tour beyond which, it was assumed, lay violent disorder: earthquakes, malaria, bandits, inhospitable inns, few roads and appalling food. On the other hand, Southern Italy lay at the heart of Magna Graecia, whose legends were hard-wired into the cultural imaginations of the educated. This book studies the British travellers who visited Italy's Southern territories. Spanning the late eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the author considers what these travellers discovered, not in the form of a survey, but as a series of unfolding impressions disclosing multiple Southern Italies. Of the numerous travellers analysed within this volume, the central figures are Henry Swinburne, Craufurd Tait Ramage and Norman Douglas, whose Old Calabria (1915) remains in print. Their appeal is that they take the region seriously: Southern Italy wasn't simply a testing ground for their superior sensibilities, it was a vibrant curiosity, unknown but within reach. Was the South simply behind on the road to European integration; or was it beyond a fault line, representing a viable alternative to Northern neuroses? The travelogues analysed in this book address a wide variety of themes which continue to shape discussions about European identity today.

Excerpt from Impressions of a Journey Round the World: Including India, Burmah and Japan I Have not a little hesitation in committing to print anything so modest as the enclosed rough notes of a voyage round the world, the more so because from its title the reader may not unreasonably suppose that he is about to peruse a record of stirring incidents and exciting adventures. For such incidents this book will, I am afraid, be scanned in vain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
