This project investigates non-cisgender people's use of media from outside of their own cultural location in processes of gender identity formation. I explored questions of which transcultural texts were important to non-cisgender audiences, what they thought about gender representation in media that originated both within and outside of their own cultural sphere, and how these representations mattered to them as they negotiated their own gender variant identities, through a case study along the U.S.-Japan axis of media exchange. I conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 44 participants, 21 from the U.S. and 23 from Japan, between June and September of 2022. Both U.S. and Japanese informants said that transcultural media played an important role in their discovery, understanding, and ongoing negotiation of their gender identities, but their interpretations of the same texts diverged significantly. While U.S. informants praised Japanese media for its transgressive representations of gender fluidity, Japanese informants called Japanese media stereotypical and regressive, and actively avoided media from their own local context. My findings point to the ongoing influence of global power dynamics in which the U.S. is positioned at the "forefront" of global discourses on gender and equality, and also to the significant role of the Internet and streaming media in processes of gender globalization. I utilize the concept of imaginative resources-images and ideas, transmitted through media, that audiences use to (re)imagine themselves and the world around them-to help explain informants' negotiation of gender in an increasingly globalized and mediatized world. Drawing from hybridity theory, I argue that transcultural media helps audiences access imaginative resources by means of-not in spite of-the cultural distance between production and reception. Cultural distance enables greater polysemy and invites audiences to perform alternative readings of media texts, creating imaginative resources that they can deploy to trouble existing hegemonies.

LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD FINALIST A transgender reporter's "powerful, profoundly moving" narrative tour through the surprisingly vibrant queer communities sprouting up in red states (New York Times Book Review), offering a vision of a stronger, more humane America. Ten years ago, Samantha Allen was a suit-and-tie-wearing Mormon missionary. Now she's a GLAAD Award-winning journalist happily married to another woman. A lot in her life has changed, but what hasn't changed is her deep love of Red State America, and of queer people who stay in so-called "flyover country" rather than moving to the liberal coasts. In Real Queer America, Allen takes us on a cross-country road-trip stretching all the way from Provo, Utah to the Rio Grande Valley to the Bible Belt to the Deep South. Her motto for the trip: "Something gay every day." Making pit stops at drag shows, political rallies, and hubs of queer life across the heartland, she introduces us to scores of extraordinary LGBT people working for change, from the first openly transgender mayor in Texas history to the manager of the only queer night club in Bloomington, Indiana, and many more. Capturing profound cultural shifts underway in unexpected places and revealing a national network of chosen family fighting for a better world, Real Queer America is a treasure trove of uplifting stories and a much-needed source of hope and inspiration in these divided times.

My name is Emma Jane Preston and I am 52 years old from Blackburn, Lancashire. I am not a transgender celebrity, transgender actress, model or socialite. I am just Emma, a shop keeper down the road in Burnley with two beautiful children. I am a person who happens to live and breathe with red blood. I decided to start writing a diary which soon turned into a couple of chapters. Over time this turned into 8 chapters and then sat doing nothing for a long time. Then one day I started writing again and in the space of 74 days I wrote around 63,000 words. Forewarned - I have had to proof read the book myself as I do not have the money to get it done professionally.Being Transgender is not a science or text book on the world of transgender. It is not a book on the medical process, nor is it a book about the brain and whether it is male or female. You will find no percentage rates of 'this or that'. There are no explanations of all the nuances of LGBTQIA+ or the terms under the umbrella of 'trans' OR 'transgender'.My book is about my journey; an ordinary person with an extraordinary story. Sometimes the book is funny - not in a belly laugh funny but in a comical way. Sometimes it is sad, to the point that I am pretty certain you will feel like crying. Sometimes it is thought provoking and sometimes I just ramble on about life in general. The book is pretty much a diary with the first half talking about my life living on the opposite side. The rest of the book talks about the last four years of my transition.Chapter 101 (purposely named) is a read in itself and shows you just how your moral compass can be tested & affected by your mind-set, others mind-set and all of the curve-balls that life throws at you.Diversity, equality and inclusion are the cornerstone of my values and I try to portray this throughout the book. I am a member of the LGBT community. I am proud of how the community comes together in times of need but I show another side too. This is a side that highlights the beauty of all-human nature; where complete strangers rise up to become fierce friends.I have met some wonderful people in my life but I have also met those that would do harm to me and others in the minority communities. I try so hard in life to judge no-one, though I will explain how I am judged every day of my life. There are people out there who seem unable to treat fellow humans with respect, care and (let's be honest) appropriately. I will talk about having to go to court and two individuals who were sentenced following such an incident. I will talk about running flat out of money and a suicide attempt. However it is not all bad. There have been some great times and I would not walk away from being transgender. However I would not wish it on anyone. You may be reading this and be in staunch opposition to the LGBT community and especially transgender people. That is fine. I would love you to buy my book, have an open mind to reading and understanding my journey. We all have journeys in life, mine is just one. Some of my good friends have breezed through with few (to no) issues, others struggle to even walk out their door. I am in the public eye in so much as I am a retail manager so I see hundreds to thousands of people a day.Imagine if you will, going to work knowing that you will be laughed at, talked about, insulted behind your back and in some cases, right to your face. Imagine knowing that each day you are going to feel the wrath of someone or their ridiculing of you simply because of who you are. I feel that anyone in the minority communities (whether race, religion, creed, sexuality, disability or gender) will know what I mean. I am highly visible on social media, especially Linkedin as well as 3 TV appearances on game shows so I do tend to put myself out there. If you decide to buy my book I thank you with all my heart. Please will you leave a review as soon as you canEmma

From bestselling author of She’s Not There, New York Times opinion columnist, and human rights activist Jennifer Finney Boylan, Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs, a memoir of the transformative power of loving dogs. This is a book about dogs: the love we have for them, and the way that love helps us understand the people we have been. It’s in the love of dogs, and my love for them, that I can best now take the measure of the child I once was, and the bottomless, unfathomable desires that once haunted me. There are times when it is hard for me to fully remember that love, which was once so fragile, and so fierce. Sometimes it seems to fade before me, like breath on a mirror. But I remember the dogs. In her New York Times opinion column, Jennifer Finney Boylan wrote about her relationship with her beloved dog Indigo, and her wise, funny, heartbreaking piece went viral. In Good Boy, Boylan explores what should be the simplest topic in the world, but never is: finding and giving love. Good Boy is a universal account of a remarkable story: showing how a young boy became a middle-aged woman—accompanied at seven crucial moments of growth and transformation by seven memorable dogs. “Everything I know about love,” she writes, “I learned from dogs.” Their love enables us to pull off what seem like impossible feats: to find our way home when we are lost, to live our lives with humor and courage, and above all, to best become our true selves.

Life Without Pockets--My Long Journey into Womanhood is a deeply personal story written to help all audiences better understand gender dysphoria, identity, and transformation. The book is an intimate true story chronicling Carla Ernst's journey from male to female. She offers her take on what it's like to "transition" in the context of societal expectations, while candidly revealing the mental, emotional, and physical impact that gender change can have on a human being. This memoir is an inspiring and thought-provoking view on being transgender, and the challenges of pretending to be someone society says you are until you eventually become the person you know you are. The author uses her own experiences to convey the unique challenges of being transgender while providing a broader framework of the many influences that gender has on the individual and people around her. In response to the countless questions that Ms. Ernst - like most trans people - receives about being transgender, the book is written in an FAQ style. Through these experiences, Ms. Ernst has found her own sense of joy, peace, and happiness. Carla's wish is to help others better understand and cope with the confusion, pain, and fear inherent in the transgender experience. Whether you are on that journey yourself or are a loved one of a transgender person, Life Without Pockets is a powerful narrative that will transform the way you think and feel about transgender.

Pedagogical research faces a challenge in acknowledging and integrating the valuable insights provided by narrative inquiries, particularly those centered around educators' tipping points. Despite the richness of these narratives in understanding pedagogy, there exists a bias towards traditional, quantitative research methods, leading to limited recognition and acceptance of qualitative studies. This lack of acceptance poses a barrier to leveraging the authentic experiences of educators for designing effective professional development and teacher education opportunities. The key challenges include the undervaluation of narrative inquiries, concerns about generalizability, the need to balance authenticity with research rigor, and the restricted influence on professional development due to the limited integration of narratives into the research base. Addressing these challenges is crucial for fostering a more holistic understanding of pedagogical development and improving the quality of teacher education. Inquiries of Pedagogical Shifts and Critical Mindsets Among Educators delves into unexplored pedagogy through a compendium of original research studies. The focus is on narrative inquiries, case studies, and phenomenological investigations, offering a nuanced understanding of pedagogical shifts and critical mindsets among P-16 educators. Inspired by Novoa's conceptualization of "Tipping Points," the book unfolds the narratives and lived experiences that propel educators toward transformative shifts in their teaching methodologies.

The powerful coming-of-age story of an ultra-Orthodox child who was born to become a rabbinic leader and instead became a woman Abby Stein was raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, isolated in a culture that lives according to the laws and practices of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe, speaking only Yiddish and Hebrew and shunning modern life. Stein was born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl. She suppressed her desire for a new body while looking for answers wherever she could find them, from forbidden religious texts to smuggled secular examinations of faith. Finally, she orchestrated a personal exodus from ultra-Orthodox manhood to mainstream femininity-a radical choice that forced her to leave her home, her family, her way of life. Powerful in the truths it reveals about biology, culture, faith, and identity, Becoming Eve poses the enduring question: How far will you go to become the person you were meant to be?
