Peggy Piercy, a 112-year-old crofter, lives on a remote island in farm, raising her great, great grandniece Gemma and her great, great grandnephew Martin. Eight years ago, Gemma and Martin were brought to Peggy and entrusted to her care, having been orphaned after their parents disappeared while traveling between the Isles of Night. Peggy has enjoyed bringing them up, but now that they are teenagers she wants them to get an education. To do this, Peggy must transport them in her rickety boat on a long journey across some of the most pirate-infested, dangerous-creature infested, weirdo-infested, and unpredictable sky this side of the Main Drift. One morning, Peggy, Gemma, Martin, and Peggy’s sky-cat Botcher set sail. It is an exciting journey for sheltered Gemma and Martin, who have little knowledge of the world around them. Along the way, they encounter a toll-demanding sky-troll; a deadly sky-shark; a crossbow-happy survivor of a child army; an eccentric rat-skinner; a submarine from another dimension; a sky-motel where the customers are made to fit the beds and provide their own dinners; and the seductive Friendly Isle, which few ever manage to leave. Maneuvering all these dangers and desperate characters, the four reach their final destination, only to find more surprises awaiting them. Sky Run is the exciting new adventure by author Alex Shearer, and is sure to capture the interest of action-loving young readers. This book is aimed as readers aged 9 to 12, and has a fast-paced, adventurous tone throughout. The pirate/adventure theme is sure to attract young boy readers. p>Four unaccompanied migrant children come together along the arduous journey north through Mexico to the United States border in this ode to the power of hope and connection even in the face of uncertainty and fear. Every year, roughly 50,000 unaccompanied minors arrive at the US/Mexico border to present themselves for asylum or related visas. The majority of these children are non-Mexicans fleeing the systemic violence of Central America’s "Northern Triangle": Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. A Journey Toward Hope tells the story of Rodrigo, a 14-year-old escaping Honduran violence; Alessandra, a 10-year-old Guatemalan whose first language is Q'eqchi'; and the Salvadoran siblings Laura and Nando. Though their reasons for making the trip are different and the journey northward is perilous, the four children band together, finding strength in one another as they share the dreams of their past and the hopes for their future. A Journey Toward Hope is written in collaboration with Baylor University’s Social Innovation Collaborative, with illustrations by the award-winning Susan Guevara (Chato's Kitchen, American Library Association Notable Book, New York Public Library's 100 Great Children’s Books / 100 Years). It includes four pages of nonfiction back matter with additional information and resources created by the Baylor Social Innovation Collaborative.

This is mine. I am not a famous athlete or a movie star. I am not a head-liner musician. What I am is seen only on Sunday morning, when people sit in church. I am the music worship leader, but the people didn't see the real me. I was a confused, frustrated, angry and depressed person with low-self esteem, a negative and defeated attitude, and a victim-failure mindset. I was in financial bondage. I carried this emotional baggage with me into my fifties. I lugged it around while I was in paid music ministry in local churches... Like millions of Christians, I was raised in a Christian home with a particular set of beliefs and values that was to be accepted, not challenged. My false belief system, combined with some experiences, hurt me more than helped me, and I am to some degree still paying the consequences. CHAPTER 7, Page 59 The most compelling situation in my life was finding out why, especially as a Christian, I had all of these problems..another compelling factor was how all of this was affecting my family life. I knew it was not supposed to be like it was, and was afraid of the potential negative consequences...everything in my life was just the opposite of what my belief system told me it should be. I either needed to change my beliefs or find out why mine weren't working...Furthermore, my negative strongholds had become traps. BACK COVER This book is for professing Christians who sit in church, looking and acting like everything is okay, when they know it is not. The author speaks form personal experience of wearing an "emotional mask" for 25 years, during which time he was a minister of music in churches, while he struggled with anger, low self-esteem, depression, a defeated attitude, and codependency. This is a biblically-based, self-help recovery book. The author talks about the confusion caused by Scripture taken out of context and religious phrases void of meaning. The book addresses the benefits of Christian counseling, the practical and healing process of recovery, and how to fulfill one's potential and live a life of spiritual victory. Practical steps are given for overcoming anger, low self-esteem, a negative attitude, and codependency. The author tells how a person can make a choice to be happy, and how to develop a disciplined thought life. The book is based on Corinthians 10:4-5, where it says to overcome strongholds by "taking every thought captive to obedience of Christ." You will also gain more awareness of how much wrong thinking from childhood and religious teaching can impact the present, and how self-esteem is important in experiencing God's best.

Roger Nash Baldwin's thirty-year tenure as director of the ACLU marked the period when the modern understanding of the Bill of Rights came into being. Spearheaded by Baldwin, volunteer attorneys of the caliber of Clarence Darrow, Arthur Garfield Hays, Osmond Frankel, and Edward Ennis transformed the constitutional landscape. Company police forces were dismantled. Antievolutionists were discredited (thanks to the Scopes Trial). Censorship of such works as James Joyce's Ulysses was halted. The Scottsboro Boys and Sacco and Vanzetti were defended. The right of free speech for communists and Ku Klux Klansmen alike was upheld, and the foundations were laid for an end to school segregation. Robert Cottrell's magnificent book recaptures the accomplishments and contradictions of the complicated man at the center of these events. Driven, vain, frugal, and tempestuous, America's greatest civil libertarian was initially also a staunch defender of Communist Russia, deferred to the U.S. government over the internment of Japanese Americans, and openly admired J. Edgar Hoover and Douglas MacArthur. His personal relationships were equally complex. Spanning a hundred years from the late 1800s through Baldwin's death in 1981, this riveting biography is an eye-opening view of the development of the American left.
