Humanizing LIS Education and Practice: Diversity by Design demonstrates that diversity concerns are relevant to all and need to be approached in a systematic way. Developing the Diversity by Design concept articulated by Dali and Caidi in 2017, the book promotes the notion of the diversity mindset. Grouped into three parts, the chapters within this volume have been written by an international team of seasoned academics and practitioners who make diversity integral to their professional and scholarly activities. Building on the Diversity by Design approach, the book presents case studies with practice models for two primary audiences: LIS educators and LIS practitioners. Chapters cover a range of issues, including, but not limited to, academic promotion and tenure; the decolonization of LIS education; engaging Indigenous and multicultural communities; librarians’ professional development in diversity and social justice; and the decolonization of library access practices and policies. As a collection, the book illustrates a systems-thinking approach to fostering diversity and inclusion in LIS, integrating it by design into the LIS curriculum and professional practice. Calling on individuals, organizations, policymakers, and LIS educators to make diversity integral to their daily activities and curriculum, Humanizing LIS Education and Practice: Diversity by Design will be of interest to anyone engaged in research and professional practice in Library and Information Science.

“While full of tales of innovation, ideas that challenge our practice, and a regular dose of critical thinking, these pages are likewise full of humanism and heart.” Brian Kenney, Director at White Plains Public Library (NY); from the Foreword Adaptation to change that’s based on thoughtful planning and grounded in the mission of libraries: it’s a model that respected LIS thinker and educator Michael Stephens terms “hyperlinked librarianship.” And the result, for librarians in leadership positions as well as those working on the front lines, is flexible librarianship that’s able to stay closely aligned with the needs and wants of library users. In this collection of essays from his “Office Hours” columns in Library Journal, Stephens explores the issues and emerging trends that are transforming the profession. Among the topics he discusses are: the importance of accessible, welcoming, and responsive library environments that invite open and equitable participation, and which factors are preventing many libraries from ramping up community engagement and user-focused services;challenges, developments, and emerging opportunities in the field, including new ways to reach users and harness curiosity;considerations for prospective librarians, from knowing what you want out of the profession to learning how to aim for it;why LIS curriculum and teaching styles need to evolve;mentoring and collaboration; andthe concept of the library as classroom, a participatory space to experiment with new professional roles, new technologies, and new ways of interacting with patrons.Bringing together ideas for practice, supporting evidence from recent research, and insights into what lies ahead, this book will inform and inspire librarians of all types.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been on the agenda in India for quite some time. The private sector is generally more active in this area than the Governmental and public sector; and the situation is slowly changing. The concept of CSR is finally coming out of the purview of ‘doing social good’ and is fast becoming a ‘business necessity’. This approach to CSR is gaining ground and many corporate houses are realizing the benefits they get in business by extending help to their workers, local community and society at large. There are many corporate companies and voluntary foundations in India who are doing commendable work in education, health, environment and energy under CSR. CSR can also be extended to public libraries, because public libraries are considered as ‘social institutions’ providing basic information for social, economic and cultural development of citizens; and to sustain lifelong learning for students. Public libraries play a vital role in disseminating existing knowledge and promote the creation of new knowledge.
