Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Vol. 1: For the Year 1882 During the past year the Executive and Finance Committees have carried out your wishes in respect to altering, repairing, and improving our building. I am happy to report that the entire cost attending this work, amounting to about five thousand dollars, has been paid without adding to the debt of this institution. We have now put in good repair, and improved in many respects, our halls, besides tastefully decorating them, so that now no halls in the city are superior to ours in convenience and beauty. By doing this we have augmented our financial ability, as, without these repairs, we could not let our halls at remunerative prices, competing, as we are now obliged to do, with other proprietors of similar accommo dations. Ive cannot expect in future so large a revenue from our halls as we received when there were not so many in our vicinity competing with us.
