Excerpt from book: DEPARTMENT OF SUMMARIES TO BE DEVOTED TO DIGESTS OF PROGRESS IN BIOLOGY While the Transactions will continue to be primarily a Journal of research in mier-- oiology, it is recognized that the field has become so broad as to preclude the possibihf of freauent articles in any one of the departments of special interest. Because of this it will be the policy to present, from time to time, supplementary digests of the progress being made in the various fields of micro-oioloiiy It is also proposed to introduce similar summaries of the progress made in some departments not represented in our articles of research. This is done with the feeling that such reviews will Increase the permanent alue of the Transactions to all who may not have access to a large list of technical biological journals, nor the time to make the survey for themselves. PROGRESS IN EVOLUTIONARY THOUGHT SOME LATTER-DAY ASPECTS OF DARWINISM. By J. F. Abbott. A lecture given before the faculty and students of Washington University Jan. 9, 1912. If any one thing can be taken as a symbol of the present time, I fancy the most appropriate would be the hammer. Not only is the hammer the symbol of constructive industry so characteristic of our age, but it may also typify the spirit of iconoclasm, which is equally, if not more strikingly, characteristic. From the muckraking of a popular magazine to the calm, deliberate, destructive criticism of a system of philosophy, now is essentially a time of making over. The present generation has no reverence for traditions of the past unless they be in harmony with the point of view of the present. It is by some considered a sort of poetic justice that the image of the greatest iconoclast of modern times, in effect if not in pur- pose, - -Charles Darwin, ?shou.

Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Vol. 28: Twenty-Ninth Annual Meeting, Held at Ithaca, New York, June 29 and 30, 1906 No more timely subject, it seems to me, can be discussed in a presidential address before the American Microscopical Society than the origin and development of the projection microscope, since by the universality of the electric light many can make use of this most potent means of illustration. When the task was begun it was not thought that the trail would lead so far back into the past nor be so obscure and difficult to follow. In following up the trail it becomes increasingly evident that the records of human achievement are secondary records only. Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Vol. 39: January, 1920 From this it is seen that the degree of infestation of the host is comparatively small. Whereas the number of adults met with was quite limited, larvae were very plentiful when present at all. In situ all of the adults and most of the larvae were found free in the stomach or intestine, but many larvae - forty-one in the case of the third fish in the table - were attached to the bottoms of deep pits in the mucosa of the pyloric region of the stomach. These pits were not mere depressions of the wall of the stomach but actual cavities, as shown in figure 7, bordered by a pronounced annular thickening of the mucous membrane and as much as 2mm. In dia meter. Larvae ranging in size from almost the smallest met with to those near the adult stage in development were tightly crowded into these pits and at the same time strongly contracted longitudinally. Excerpt from Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Vol. 18: Nineteenth Annual Meeting Held at Carnegie Library, Pittsburg, Pa., August 18, 19 and 20, 1896 From the peculiarly economic standpoint, the investigator himself reaps very little return in fame or wealth. But the pathway is broadened and made plain to discoveries which enrich the world. You are representatives of those who with the microscope have carried our knowledge downward into the deep, while the astronomer gazing upward has made his way. Nature is most to be admired in things that are least known. I welcome you in this ancient city, the city of industries, in which you will find anything that you wish to see, from a beautiful spectroscope, perfect in all its adjustments, to the grosser parts of such a mechanism as the man-oi - war where we make anything from a tack to a locomotive or an ocean steamer. I welcome you to a city in which we have some thing more than industries. Standing on the companion way of a steamer a few days ago, I overheard a young lady say. Where are those people from Her escort replied, From Pittsburg. She said, Where they have nothing but smoke and money. We have a great deal of smoke at times and there is a little money to be picked up in odd nooks and corners, Iam told by some. But we have other things. This beautiful building, the gift of one of our citi zens, the home of art and science; also the extensive park and conservatory. We have schools, colleges, hospitals and churches and learned societies and all those things that go to make the city a desirable place of residence in Spite of its smoke. We have something better - a disposition to grow in knowledge and to make advancement in all lines Open to us. In the name of my fellow-citizens and the Iron City Microscopical Society I extend to you all a most hearty welcome.
