This recommended practice covers minimum requirements for air brake hose assemblies made from reinforcedelastomeric hose and suitable fittings for use in automotive air brake systems including flexible connections from frame toaxle, tractor to trailer, trailer to trailer and other unshielded air lines with air pressures up to 1 MPa, that are exposed topotential pull or impact. This hose is not to be used where temperatures, external or internal, fall outside the range of-40 °C to +100 °C.This revision adds a fourth hose type, AIII, for use with permanent fittings only. Table 1 has been revised and nowcontains hoses A and AIII, Table 2 has been added for hoses AI and AII. All other Tables were renumbered accordingly.A note has been added that hose Type AIII in Table 1 can only be coupled with permanent fittings.

This specification covers seven types of air hose intended for use in automotive air brake systems. The system includes all air actuated equipment leading from the air brake line. These types of hose are not to be used from the air compressor to air reservoir if air temperature is in excess of 250 F. Type G hose is to be used in frame and cab piping only, and only where air temperature is not in excess of 200 F. The types of hose are as follows: Type AHose shall be mandrel built having a tube and friction of oil resisting rubber, reinforced with cotton or synthetic cord or duck plies or a combination of both, and a cover of oil resisting compounds utilizing polymerized chloroprene as the basic material. Assemble with reusable or permanent type metal end fittings. Type BHose shall be nonmandrel built having a tube and friction of oil resisting rubber, reinforced with cotton or synthetic cord or duck plies or a combination of both, and a cover of oil resisting compounds utilizing polymerized chloroprene as the basic material. Assemble with reusable or permanent type metal end fittings. Type CHose shall be mandrel built having a tube of oil resisting rubber, reinforced with one braid of high tensile steel wire and a cover of oil resisting compounds utilizing polymerized chloroprene as the basic material. A cotton braid or other suitable material may be used to anchor the cover to the hose. Assemble with permanent type metal end fittings only. Type DHose shall be mandrel built having a tube of oil resisting rubber, reinforced by two cotton or synthetic braids separated by a wire braid. All braids are to be impregnated with an oil and age resisting compound. The wire braid may be of high tensile carbon steel or of series 300 stainless steel. Hose may also have an optional thin cover of oil resisting compound utilizing polymerized chloroprene as the basic material. Assemble with reusable or permanent type metal end fittings. Class IThe wire braid shall be of high tensile carbon steel. Class IIThe wire braid shall be of 300 series stainless steel. Type EHose shall be mandrel built having a tube of oil resisting rubber, reinforced with two cotton or synthetic braids separated by a wire braid. All braids are to be impregnated with an oil and age resisting compound. This hose is not to be used on any line where abrasion of the outer cover will be encountered in its service. Assemble with reusable type metal end fittings only. Type FHose shall be mandrel built having a tube of oil resisting rubber, reinforced with one 300 Series stainless steel braid and one fabric braid separated by an insulation layer of oil resisting rubber. The fabric braid is to be impregnated with an oil and age resistant compound. Assemble with reusable or permanent type metal end fittings. Type GHose shall be nonmandrel built having a tube of polyamide nylon reinforced with a braid of polyester or equivalent yarn, and an oil resistant cover of polyamide or polyurethane material containing self-extinguishing flame inhibitors. The polyamide shall have a maximum moisture absorption of 2% at 100% relative humidity and 75 F, and a minimum melting point of 350 F. This hose is intended for inframe and cab piping and for a temperature range of -40 F to 200 F. This hose is not to be used for frame to axle or cab to trailer connections. Assemble with either permanent or reusable type metal end fittings.CAUTION: This hose is composed in part of thermoplastic materials and must not be used in applications where temperatures may exceed the range shown.

This SAE Standard provides general and dimensional specifications for the most common hose fittings used in conjunction with hydraulic hoses specified in SAE J517 and utilized in hydraulic systems on mobile and stationary equipment. The general specifications contained in Sections 1 through 17 are applicable to all hydraulic hose fittings and supplement the detailed specifications for the 100R-series fittings contained in the later sections of this document. This document shall be utilized as a procurement document only to the extent agreed upon by the manufacturer and user.Refer to SAE J517 for specifications of hose and information on hose assemblies. SAE J1273 contains information on application factors affecting hose fittings, hose, and hose assemblies. The rated working pressure of a hose assembly comprising SAE J516 fittings and SAE J517 hoses shall not exceed the lower of the two working pressure rated values. The following are hose fitting types contained in this document: Male and female 45-degree flare hose fittings shall be as shown by the 37-degree flare figures and tables. It is recommended that where step sizes or additional types of fittings are required, they be designed to conform with the specifications of this document insofar as they may apply. The following general specifications shall supplement the dimensional data contained in the tables with respect to all unspecified detail. Figure 20 is incorrect. The note on the drawing currently states "HEX OPTIONAL." The correct wording is "HEX SIZE OPTIONAL."

This is a performance requirement qualification specification intended to give reasonable flexibility in the initial engineering selection of materials when fabricated by currently accepted manufacturing processes. It is not intended to be used for quality control purposes. This SAE Recommended Practice covers the tubing intended primarily for use as hydraulic brake lines on motor vehicles. It covers materials, manufacturing processes, and general properties required to meet the wide range of service encountered in automotive applications. To meet this need, it must be formed, assembled, handled, and installed in accordance with sound engineering and manufacturing practices. This specification covers only the basic tubing and does not include attachments such as protective armor or end fittings.

This SAE Standard covers complete general and dimensional specifications for the flanged heads and split flange clamp halves applicable to four-bolt split flange type tube, pipe, and hose connections with appropriate references to the O-ring seals and attaching components used in their assembly. (See Figures 1 and 2.) Also included are recommended port dimensions and port design considerations. The flanged heads specified are incorporated into fittings having suitable means for attachment of tubes, pipes, or hoses to provide connection ends. These connections are intended for application in hydraulic systems, on industrial and commercial products, where it is desired to avoid the use of threaded connections.THE RATED WORKING PRESSURE OF A HOSE ASSEMBLY COMPRISING SAE J518 HOSE CONNECTIONS AND SAE J517 HOSE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE LOWER OF THE TWO WORKING PRESSURE RATED VALUES.Flanged heads shall be as specified in Figure 3 and Table 1. Split flange clamp halves shall be as specified in Figure 4 and Table 1. Port dimensions and spacing shall be as specified in Figure 5 and Table 2.O-ring seals, having nominal dimensions as indicated in Table 1, are used in conjunction with these connections. They shall conform to the seals specified in SAE J120, Table on Dimensions and Tolerances.Bolts for use with these connections shall be of the sizes and lengths indicated in Table 1. They shall be of SAE Grade 5 material or better as specified in SAE J429.
