Excerpt from Philological Tracts, Vol. 1 To assign the reasons why these Tracts have been selected in preference to others on the same or Similar subjects, of equal or superior merit, could serve no important purpose. The Selector does not lay claim to the praise of having made the best possible choice, - he will be contented, if competent judges allow that he has made a good one. It is scarcely requisite to add, that the Editor does not by any means consider himself as answerable for the accuracy of all the statements, or the sound ness of all the principles contained in these Tracts, even where he has not thought it neces sary to express his dissent. His responsibili ty goes no farther than what is involved in a recommendation of them, as, on the whole, well fitted, if judiciously used, to cultivate the taste and the talent for principled and satisfactory interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. Excerpt from Theological Tracts, Vol. 2: Selected and Original Jeremy Tatlor, one of the great names in English theology and literature, was born at Cambridge in 1613. His parents were in humble circumstances, but he had the honour of being a lineal descendant of Dr. Rowland Taylor, who suffered death at the stake on Aldham Common, near Hadleigh, in the third year of Queen Mary," amid the blessings and lamentations of his parishioners, and with a courageous and kindly cheerfulness which has scarcely its parallel even in those days of religious heroism." At three years of age he was sent to the Grammar school, and when thirteen years he was entered at Caius College, in his native city, as a sizar or poor scholar. Shortly after becoming Master of Arts in 1633, having previously been admitted to Holy Orders, he was for a time employed as Lecturer in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and from his youth as well as his eloquence excited great attention. In 1636 he procured a fellowship in All Souls College, Oxford, through the influence of Archbishop Laud, who also nominated him one of his Chaplains, and obtained for him the living of Uppingham, where, having married, he settled in 1640. In 1612, he was created D. D., previous to which he had been made Chaplain in Ordinary to Charles I., before whom he frequently preached, and whom he attended in several of his campaigns against the Parliament. - On the Parliament becoming victorious his living was sequestered, and he retired to Wales, and was hospitably received by the Earl of Carberry at Golden Grove, where he produced many of the works by which he has immortalized himself and enriched British literature. Bible is another word, which has now been long in ufc ' ' among Chriftians, denoting the whole collection of writings received by them, as of divine Authority. The word, primarily, denotes book. But now is given to the writings of Prophets and ApoQles by way of eminence. This collection is the Boot, or Bible, the book of books, as fuperior in excellence to all other books. The word feems to be ufed in this fenfe by Chryfojlom in a paf-fagc already (a) cited. " I therefore exhort all of you to procure to your-" felves Bsblety g.Sxia. If you have nothing elfe, take care to have the " New Tell ament, particularly, the Acts of the Apoftles, and the Gof-" pels, for your conftant inftrudtors." And Jerome fays, "That ( ) the " Scriptures being all writ by one Spirit, arc called one book." Wc like-like faw formerly a pallage of Augujlin, where he informs us, " That (r) " fomc called all the canonical fcriptures one book, on account of their " wonderful harmonie, and unity of defign throughout." And I then Caid: "It is likely, that this way of fpeaking gradually brought in the general ufc of the word Bible, for the whole collection of the fcriptures, or the books of the Old and New Teltament." In Ihort, the ancient Chriftians were continually fpeaking of the Divine Oracles, and the Divine Books, and were much employed in reading them, as Otryfojhsn dircCts in a paflage, tranfcribed (d) below: where he recommends the reading the divine books daily, forenoon and afternoon. At length the whole collection was called the book, or the bible. Dr. Neumann has an Epijlle, or Ihort Diflertation (e) concerning the origin of this name of our facred collection of books.
