Excerpt from Australian Life in Town Country It is necessary to conceive Of Australia not as a colony containing a population equal to little more than one half the number of inhabitants of the city Of London, but as an immense continent, three million square miles in extent. Compared to other continents, which have their coast lines indented by huge gulfs, and which push great peninsulas out into the ocean, Australia is a Sin gularly solid piece of land. As a matter Of fact, its coast line is smaller in proportion to its area than that of any other continent. The physical con tour Of the continent is remarkable for the same monotony. Its surface is, broadly speaking, a graduated system of immense plateaux and plains. The one striking feature in Australian orography is a strip of highland running from north to south along the eastern coast. These highlands, which separate the coastal plains and valleys from the immense level interior of the continent, bear the general name of the Dividing Range. In the south-eastern corner of Australia, this range bends westward, traversing the whole state Of Victoria and ending near the eastern border Of South Aus tralia. It is in the south-eastern corner that the Dividing Range attains its greatest altitude, sev eral peaks Of the Australian Alps being over seven thousand feet in height. Town Life in Australia by Richard Ernest Nowell Twopeny Although most educated people know that Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide are populous towns, I should doubt whether one Englishman, who has not been to Australia, out of a hundred realizes that fact. I well remember that, although I had taken some trouble to read up information about Melbourne, I was never more thoroughly surprised than during the first few hours after my arrival there. And I hear almost everyone who comes out from England say that his experience has been the same as my own. In one sense the visitor is disappointed with his first day in an Australian city. The novelties and the differences from the Old Country do not strike him nearly so much as the resemblances. It is only as he gets to know the place better that he begins to to notice the differences. The first prevailing impression is that a slice of Liverpool has been bodily transplanted to the Antipodes, that you must have landed in England again by mistake, and it is only by degrees that you begin to see that the resemblance is more superficial than real. Although Sydney is the older town, Melbourne is justly entitled to be considered the metropolis of the Southern Hemisphere. The natural beauties of Sydney are worth coming all the way to Australia to see; while the situation of Melbourne is commonplace if not actually ugly; but it is in the Victorian city that the trade and capital, the business and pleasure of Australia chiefly centre. Is there a company to be got up to stock the wilds of Western Australia, or to form a railway on the land-grant system in Queensland, to introduce the electric light, or to spread education amongst the black fellows, the promoters either belong to Melbourne, or go there for their capital. The headquarters of nearly all the large commercial institutions which extend their operation beyond the limits of any one colony are to be found there. If you wish to transact business well and quickly, to organize a new enterprise--in short, to estimate and understand the trade of Australia, you must go to Melbourne and not to Sydney, and this in spite of the fact that Victoria is a small colony handicapped by heavy protectionist duties, whilst Sydney is, comparatively speaking, a free port, at the base of an enormous area. The actual production does not take place in Victoria, but it is in Melbourne that the money resulting from the productions of other colonies as well as of Victoria is turned over. It is Melbourne money chiefly that opens up new tracts of land for settlement in the interior of the continent, and Melbourne brains that find the outlets for fresh commerce in every direction. There is a bustle and life about Melbourne which you altogether miss in Sydney. The Melbourne man is always on the look-out for business, the Sydney man waits for business to come to him. The one is always in a hurry, the other takes life more easily. And as it is with business, so it is with pleasure. Excerpt from Australian Life: Black and White Fast steamboats and new mail routes have brought the Australian colonies into comparatively intimate relations with the mother-land; and in these days of "globe trotting," when every fifth man one meets has "gone round the world," it is usual enough to find that the tour has comprised visits to the Australian capitals and perhaps a little mild roughing it on some cattle or sheep station within easy distance of rail or high road. Excerpt from Grey Town: An Australian Story Grey Town. An Australian Story. Chapter I. The Presbytery. Grey Town looks down on the river and the ocean, its streets climbing up the small hill upon which the town has been built. It is a pleasant place in which to live, where, in winter, the air is warm, and in summer a cool breeze from the ocean tempers the hottest day. At the feet of the town the ocean beats restlessly on the narrow strip of beach that fringes the shore. On the distant horizon one may often see the black smoke, sometimes the hull, shadowy and indistinct, of some passing steamer. But only the smaller steamers or ships can enter the bay, for there are reefs and sand-spits, to touch which would mean destruction. Beside the town, the River Grey enters the ocean. When the tide is high, and the river swollen by heavy rains, there is a turmoil of waters at the bar, ocean and river contending for mastery. Then the river, banked up at its exit, overflows the low lands that lie to the east of the town, turning a green valley into a muddy lake. At other times the Grey valley is green and pleasant, excepting where the masses of grey rock from which it has its name jut out over the river. Excerpt from Australian Life I was walking along George Street, Brisbane, last Monday in the afternoon when I suddenly ran upon my friend Power. Power is a man worth knowing. I suppose no one has been along the Australian coast, from Perth to Port Darwin, more Often than he has. Is there a little port-town all round that he has not been in? Is there a river, navi gable or unnavigable, that finds its way into Australian seas. That he has not floated on? His stock Of tales is the largest and best Of anyone I know, and he has a sort of humorous kindliness about him, a genuine humanistic tolerance and appreciation, which has made him the friend of all sorts and conditions of men, women, and animals. He has the unctuous pleasure of discovering and understanding every oddity, and the light of this pleasure beams up in his eyes and on his lips and in his whole face as he sits Opposite some abnormal piece of humanity in a cosy corner, just as when he pauses from his submarine work in his diver's dress to observe the antics Of some eccentric denizen of the deep.
