Some people have been calling for a national strategy for Welsh archaeology for some time now and it seems that the meeting from which this volume derives has already had a positive effect to that end. These 24 papers that form the Proceedings of the IFA Wales/Cymru Conference, held at Aberystwyth in 2001, reflect the open forum' debates on issues of research strategies and policy, as well as presenting thematic papers on particular periods and/or approaches to Welsh archaeology. The overall aim is to bring together commercial, curatorial, academic and amateur interests and encourage co-operation and consultation between all parties.

New and exciting discoveries on either side of the English Channel in recent years have begun to show that people living in the coastal zones of Belgium, southern Britain, northern France and the Netherlands shared a common material culture during the Bronze Age, between three and four thousand years ago. They used similar styles of pottery and metalwork, lived in the same kind of houses and buried their dead in the same kind of tombs, often quite different to those used by their neighbours further inland. The sea did not appear to be a barrier to these people but rather a highway, connecting communities in a unique cultural identity; the 'People of La Manche'. Symbolic of these maritime Bronze Age Connections is the iconic Dover Bronze Age boat, one of Europe's greatest prehistoric discoveries and testament to the skill and technical sophistication of our Bronze Age ancestors. This monograph presents papers from a conference held in Dover in 2006 organised by the Dover Bronze Age Boat Trust, which brought together scholars from many different countries to explore and celebrate these ancient seaborne contacts. Twelve wide-ranging chapters explore themes of travel, exchange, production, magic and ritual that throw new light on our understanding of the seafaring peoples of the second millennium BC.

Moel-y-Gaer (Bodfari) is the northernmost of a series of hillforts atop the Clwydian hills in Wales. Nine seasons of survey and excavation reveal details of Moel-y-Gaer’s ramparts, entrances and interior. Discussion situates the site within the later prehistoric settlement record for north-eastern Wales paying particular attention to hillforts.

A comprehensive review of policy and practice in the historic environment, this book exposes the tensions, challenges and difficulties faced by the heritage sector at a time of political volatility. This collection comes at a key moment for planning policy in the historic environment of England. The papers reflect a wide range of views and experience in the practical environment of policy and implementation. Contributors give perspectives on both policy and practice from legal counsel to local authorities, from the country’s largest NGO to the museums sector. Some conclusions are controversial, providing an important insight into the operation of national and local government. The thrust of the volume is the need to close the gap between research and policy production. Written when the UK government’s White Paper, Planning for the Future (August 2020), was in preparation, the chapters explore the implementation of policy, its unexpected and unanticipated outcomes and the enduring legacies of guidance and established practice. It highlights tensions within the sector and the need for collaboration and partnership. This book is the most recent and comprehensive review of how the heritage sector has evolved and draws special attention to the importance of the historic environment, not just in planning policy but for the country as a whole. The chapters in this book were originally published in The Historic Environment: Policy & Practice.
