Tourism conceived as a political and cultural phenomenon, in full expansion thanks to the globalising process of late capitalism which, together with the consumer and leisure society and the information, communication and transport technologies, is radically transforming our territories and (space-time) perception of the world. A contemporary practice, mobility, yet different according to the place one is speaking from: perpetual present and pure space, deterritorialised, for the globalised; impossibility of the present and physically confined space for the localised. The uses of time and space are clearly differentiated and at the same time they themselves differentiate. The pursuit of happiness, the desire for escape, the discovery of the Other and the return to nature are, according to some tourism analysts, the generators of the imaginaries of desire when it comes to embarking on a journey. A critical analysis of these constructed imaginaries which will reveal some of the mechanisms which induce that desire in capitalist society has been the impulse behind this project. Tour-isms is structured through two interconnected realities, the ''tourist-subject'', a subject who activates environments and standardised memories legitimised by the individuality of experience and exploration; and an agent of transformation, a social player actively involved in processes of transformation of the territories s/he visits. And the ''touristified spaces'', which reveal some of the economic, political and cultural processes which impose new forms of socialisation and new uses and behaviours on the borders of private and public, what is and what can be historical. This book examines the “oil-tourism interface”, the broad range of direct and indirect contact points between offshore oil extraction and nature-based tourism. Offshore oil extraction and nature-based tourism are pursued as development paths across the North Atlantic region. Offshore oil promises economic benefits from employment and royalty payments to host societies, but is based on fossil fuel-intensive resource extraction. Nature-based tourism, instead, is based on experiencing natural environments and encountering wildlife, including whales, seals, or seabirds. They share social-ecological space, such as oceans, coastlines, cities and towns where tourism and offshore oil operations and offices are located. However, they rarely share cultural or political space, in terms of media coverage, public debate, or policy discussion that integrates both modes of development. Through a comparative analysis of Denmark, Iceland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Norway, and Scotland, this book offers important lessons for how coastal societies can better navigate relationships between resource extraction and nature-based tourism in the interests of social-ecological wellbeing.

In Securing Paradise, Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez shows how tourism and militarism have functioned together in Hawai`i and the Philippines, jointly empowering the United States to assert its geostrategic and economic interests in the Pacific. She does so by interpreting fiction, closely examining colonial and military construction projects, and delving into present-day tourist practices, spaces, and narratives. For instance, in both Hawai`i and the Philippines, U.S. military modes of mobility, control, and surveillance enable scenic tourist byways. Past and present U.S. military posts, such as the Clark and Subic Bases and the Pearl Harbor complex, have been reincarnated as destinations for tourists interested in World War II. The history of the U.S. military is foundational to tourist itineraries and imaginations in such sites. At the same time, U.S. military dominance is reinforced by the logics and practices of mobility and consumption underlying modern tourism. Working in tandem, militarism and tourism produce gendered structures of feeling and formations of knowledge.
