A chronicle, a memoir, a reflection on the pandemic, and a cultural analysis of the new spatial, social, and epistemological forms that have arisen with it, this volume weaves together cultural history, aesthetics, and urban and digital studies. It looks at the particular ways in which the possibilities for touch, touching and being touched, both physically and affectively, are reconfigured by the pandemic. How are love, care, and humanity’s complex relationships with technology and nature played out in the interval between abandoned city centres and digitally mediated gatherings? How can we comprehend the reconfiguration of relationships through the human response to the pandemic as an experience that concerns us all but affects each of us in different ways? How do we think through the technological and material dependencies that the pandemic situation establishes? And how does this allow us to imagine the world beyond the pandemic—both utopian and dystopian? The essays in this book explore the new forms of intimacy and distance that are developing in the wake of COVID-19, offering a distinctive, topical analysis in the fields of urban and digital studies.

A million years ago, Verdan’s moon was struck by an immense asteroid and smashed to bits. The shock wave generated by that collision struck Verdan with such force, it caused a disjunction in time and space, and the planet momentarily existed in two dimensions. Before their combined gravitational attractions could pull them back together, massive chunks of moon and asteroid slammed into one of the Verdans. The devastation to that world, the two spheres were no longer copies of each other and could not reunite. They would evolve independently. Touch Time is a story of a handful of pilgrims, scientists and technicians, who had come out from Adrian for work and adventure and had chosen to remain on Verdan, despite the difficulties imposed by that planet’s challenging environment. But a new danger threatened those colonists. Without prior notice or a heads up, Adrian suddenly reversed a prior decision to shut down the base there. Instead, they intended to take control of that world for the purpose of preparing it to receive the influx of migrants soon to come there. To put their plan in motion, Adrian sent a military unit out to secure the base and quell any resistance from the original colonists, and there would be resistance, for a while. The Pilgrims knew, in the end, they’d be no match for the number of invaders Adrian would send to put them down. Unless they had some place to go, a sanctuary, they’d have no future. But known to only a few, there might be one place to go, if they had the courage to get there in time.

A young couple's toxic Instagram crush spins out of control and unleashes a sinister creature in this twisted, viciously funny, "bananas good" story (Carmen Maria Machado). "Um, holy shit...This novel will be the most fun you'll have this summer." —Emily Temple, Literary Hub Remy and Alicia, a couple of insecure service workers, are not particularly happy together. But they are bound by a shared obsession with Jen, a beautiful former co-worker of Remy’s who now seems to be following her bliss as a globe-trotting jewelry designer. In and outside the bedroom, Remy and Alicia's entire relationship revolves around fantasies of Jen, whose every Instagram caption, outfit, and new age mantra they know by heart. Imagine their confused excitement when they run into Jen, in the flesh, and she invites them on a surfing trip to the Hamptons with her wealthy boyfriend and their group. Once there, Remy and Alicia try (a little too hard) to fit into Jen’s exalted social circle, but violent desire and class resentment bubble beneath the surface of this beachside paradise, threatening to erupt. As small disturbances escalate into outright horror, we find ourselves tumbling with Remy and Alicia into an uncanny alternate reality, one shaped by their most unspeakable, deviant, and intoxicating fantasies. Is this what “self-actualization” looks like? Part millennial social comedy, part psychedelic horror, and all wildly entertaining, A Touch of Jen is a sly, unflinching examination of the hidden drives that lurk just outside the frame of our carefully curated selves.
