In a career spanning almost six decades, Prof. John T. Berry has made significant contributions towards building our understanding of solidification and process-structure-property relationships in shaped castings. Celebrating his contributions, the Fourth International Shape Casting Symposium, which takes place at the 2011 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, has been organized in his honor. Shape Casting 2011 contains the proceedings of the symposium in which scientists and engineers from around the world presented their own research findings, discussed challenges in the field, and projected future directions. Papers explore such topics as liquid metal quality; filling and feeding systems; process modeling for shaped castings; structure-property relationships; performance of shaped castings; and machinability of castings.

High Temperature Metallurgical Processing contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Thermal Processing of Minerals, Metals and Materials. This symposium explores physical and chemical transformations in materials that have been designed to facilitate the recovery of valuable metals or produce other useful materials. Representatives from both industry and academia focused on the latest innovative high temperature technologies. Because high temperature processes require high energy input, the presenters addressed the need for sustainable technologies that could provide low energy consumption and low pollution emissions. The symposium also examined the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions, phase transformations at elevated temperatures, and characterization of materials used or produced in high temperature processing.

Currently, recycling of e-waste can be broadly divided into three major steps: (a) disassembly: selectively disassembly, targeting on singling out hazardous or valuable components for special treatment, is an indispensable process in recycling of e-waste; (b) upgrading: using mechanical processing and/or metallurgical processing to up-grade desirable materials content, i.e. preparing materials for refining process, such as grinding the plastics into powders; (c) refining: in the last step, recovered materials are retreated or purified by using metallurgical processing so as to be acceptable for their original using. Four topical areas are planned including one special session on the recycling of batteries. Papers in the following topics will be welcomed: Mechanical recycling of E-Wastes Recycling of plastics from E-Wastes Recovery of metals from E-wastes Hydrometallurgical recycling (leaching) of E-Wastes Combustion or pyrolysis of E-Wastes Life cycle and economic analysis for the recycling of E-Wastes
