A surprising, universal, and gorgeously illustrated story about self-acceptance, love, friendship, and the joy of embracing different perspectives, this beautiful picture book by acclaimed author Richard Jackson and two-time Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka presents a puddle with a distinct point of view. Puddle sits despondently in the playground, observing the world around her as she is dimpled by rain, splashed by shoes, piddled on by a poodle, bounced by a basketball, and stirred up by an inquisitive seagull. But when the sun makes a sudden appearance, Puddle meets an admiring new friend who lifts her spirits and makes her feel loved. Richard Jackson’s playful text shines with rhythm, repetition, and surprising turns of phrase, and Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka’s luminous paintings achieve the impossible—oh, sweet Puddle! A memorable story of friendship, love, and changing your point of view.

How do ordinary objects persist through time and across possible worlds? How do they manage to have their temporal and modal properties? These are the questions adressed in this book which is? "guided tour of theories of persistence". The book is divided in two parts. In the first, the two traditional accounts of persistence through time (endurantism and perdurantism) are combined with presentism and eternalism to yield four different views, and their variants. The resulting views are then examined in turn, in order to see which combinations are appealing and which are not. It is argued that the 'worm view' variant of eternalist perdurantism is superior to the other alternatives. In the second part of the book, the same strategy is applied to the combinations of views about persistence across possible worlds (trans-world identity, counterpart theory, modal perdurants) and views about the nature of worlds, mainly modal realism and abstractionism. Not only all the traditional and well-known views, but also some more original ones, are examined and their pros and cons are carefully weighted. Here again, it is argued that perdurance seems to be the best strategy available.

A WWII vet’s suicide drives his daughter to uncover his troubled past in this “absorbing, poignant” novel from the award-winning author of Partial Eclipse (Publishers Weekly). Zelda Dawkins knows her older lover, Foxy, is going to leave her. As Zelda prays for something, anything, to prevent the inevitable, she receives a call from her mother. Zelda’s father, a World War II prisoner of war, has hanged himself. It’s not what Zelda wanted. It’s also not unexpected. Zelda comes from a family of unspoken things. Foxy is hers. But for Zelda, her father’s suicide is more than a wellspring for her grief, rage, and guilt. It was his final escape from the screaming nightmares that kept her awake when she was young—and the closely guarded secret he took to bed with him. It’s also stirring in Zelda memories and unanswered questions of her childhood: Why did her father seem to reject her in favor of a damaged neighborhood boy named Vassil? Why was he so taken with the boy’s mother, a prostitute? How did Vassil come to be so disfigured? And what happened to her father those five years in a Japanese prison camp? It’s time for Zelda to confront the past, its legacy of cruelty, and to unearth the secrets—her father’s and her own—that have a cast a shadow over her life. “A writer of addictive emotional thrillers—as if Ruth Rendell had got hold of an A. S. Byatt novel and stripped out the digressive bits.” —The Independent “Step into the world of family secrets, lies and whispers in the dark.” —The Sunday Telegraph
