This World War One memoir has been compiled with the object of enabling the members of the 20th Machine-Gun Squadron to recall the principal incidents in its history, as well as to allow their friends and relations to obtain some idea of their experiences whilst they were serving with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Although no pains have been spared to obtain accuracy, the statements made must, necessarily, not be regarded as absolutely authoritative. Beyond doubt, many brave deeds, fully deserving of mention in these pages, must have been unavoidably overlooked, in which case the leniency of readers is requested.

This is the story of the British Army's endeavours during the Great War to deceive the enemy and trick him into weakening his defences and redeploying his reserves. In this year-by-year account, Martin Davies shows how Sir John French and Sir Douglas Haig actively encouraged their Army commanders to employ trickery so that all attacks should come as a 'complete surprise' to the enemy. The methods of concealment of real military artefacts and the creation of dummy ones were ingenious enough but the real art lay in the development of geographically dispersed deception plans which disguised the real time and place of attack and forced the enemy to defend areas threatened by fake operations. Some of these plans, such as disguising mules as tanks and creating dummy airfields bordered on the farcical but were often amazingly effective. The driving force behind the deception plans was GHQ and the Army commanders, further dispelling the myth of 'Lions led by Donkeys'. Evidence shows that the British Army employed deception to advantage in all their theatres of operation.

The Palestine Campaign has become one of the most glorified military campaigns of the twentieth century. The last campaign fought by the Ottoman Army, and thus the last act of the once-mighty Ottoman Empire, the Palestine Campaign saw the British Army under General Allenby conquer the Holy Land, forcing the Turkish army back into Europe. Meanwhile the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement ensured the British and French would continue to influence the Middle East for the next 60 years. This front saw some of the most influential stories of the Great War, from T.E. Lawrence's Arab army in the desert, to General Allenby entering Jerusalem on foot in 1917. Palestine and World War I shows how the events of the Great War have left a lasting legacy in the Middle East.
