“Daniel Barbarisi plunges into an adventure from another era when he goes in search of buried treasure, guided only by a cryptic poem, a mischievous art collector, and the footsteps another pursuer who died on the quest… Every page draws you deeper into this no-man’s-land where fortune—or tragedy—awaits.” —Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run When Forrest Fenn was given a fatal cancer diagnosis, he came up with a bold plan: He would hide a chest full of jewels and gold in the wilderness, and publish a poem that would serve as a map leading to the treasure's secret location. But he didn't die, and after hiding the treasure in 2010, Fenn instead presided over a decade-long gold rush that saw many thousands of treasure hunters scrambling across the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of his fortune. Daniel Barbarisi first learned of Fenn's hunt in 2017, when a friend became consumed with decoding the poem and convinced Barbarisi, a reporter, to document his search. What began as an attempt to capture the inner workings of Fenn's hunt quickly turned into a personal quest that led Barbarisi down a reckless and potentially dangerous path, one that found him embroiled in searcher conspiracies and matching wits with Fenn himself. Over the course of four chaotic years, several searchers would die, endless controversies would erupt, and one hunter would ultimately find the chest. But the mystery didn't end there. Full of intrigue, danger, and break-neck action, Chasing the Thrill is a riveting tale of desire, obsession, and unbridled adventure.

Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr. (1921–1987) amassed an extraordinary collection of 26,000 photographs between 1973 and 1984, recognizing that photography was an undervalued art form on which he might have a profound impact as a collector. He was mainly attracted to photographs that stimulated his imagination, and his taste ran toward the idiosyncratic—images that surprised him chiefly because he had never seen them before. In choosing the 147 works reproduced in this volume, Paul Martineau selected masterpieces as well as images from obscure sources: daguerreotypes, cartes-de-visite, and stereographs, plus mug shots, medical photographs, and works by unknown makers. The latter category contains some of the most outstanding objects in the collection, demonstrating Wagstaff’s willingness to position unfamiliar images alongside works by established masters as well as underrepresented contemporary artists of the time, including Jo Ann Callis, William Garnett, and Edmund Teske. This book is published to accompany an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from March 15 to July 31, 2016; at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT, from September 10 to December 11, 2016; and at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, ME, from February 1 to April 30, 2017.

"Forrest has spent most of his life saving things, especially photographs. That's why it's been easy for him to illustrate this book. He apologizes for showing so many pictures of himself and justifies it by describing this volume as his scrapbook of memories. He has tested the extremes in his personal life, in business, and in combat, where he learned that some of the edges were closer than he thought. Those stories are collected here. He describes his mistakes as being ample, but whispers that none have weakened his ardor for the chase."--Jacket flap.

Horses, hounds, risk-taking, adrenaline, the great outdoors and camaraderie are all part of the allure of hunting. In The Thrill of the Chase: celebrating hunting with harrier hounds in New Zealand, evocative photographs capture the essence of this dynamic sport. Equestrian journalist and hunting enthusiast Sarah Milne and award-winning photographer Rob Tucker have travelled the country recording all facets of the hunting season. Separate chapters outline the roles of key participants, including the Master, huntsman and whipper-in. Other chapters provide an insight into breeding, assessing and preparing hounds for hunting. Several of New Zealand's most recognised hunting identities, including 95-year-old Bessie Fullerton-Smith, Patroness of the New Zealand Hunts' Association are profiled and give their personal insights into the unique qualities of hunting in this country. As many paddocks in New Zealand are enclosed by post and wire fences, jumping wire presents a significant difference from hunting in either England or the USA. Although visitors initially find this challenging, it is an accepted part of the sport here. In the diverse New Zealand landscape, hunting can involve negotiating large fences (often wire), riding through streams or on the beach and around swamps and areas of bush. From Northland's coast-to-coast hunting, to rolling green Waikato farms, the big gorse hedges of Canterbury and expansive tussock lands of Central Otago, Rob Tucker's photographs record many of the hunts in action. Mount Taranaki, the mountains of the Central Plateau and the wide vistas of Hawkes Bay all provide wonderful backdrops for horses and hounds enjoying a day's hunting. Many good competition horses have started their careers in the hunting field and several New Zealand event riders have enjoyed the sport, including Mark Todd who comments in his foreword on 'the excitement of crossing fantastic country at speed and the challenge of jumping whatever comes in front of you.' One hundred and forty stunning photographs capture the action, fun and magnificent scenery that makes hunting in New Zealand such a special sport. Sarah Milne has been passionate about hunting since she first participated in the sport 26 years ago. It combines her love of horses and the New Zealand countryside with the challenge of following hounds. Sarah is an amateur whipper-in for the Waikato hunt and lives in Cambridge with her husband and two sons. She writes regularly for equestrian publications both here and internationally. Rob Tucker has been taking photographs for 36 years including four America's Cup regattas as Team New Zealand's in-house photographer, private work for Queen Elizabeth II, fashion photography with Elle McPherson and two front covers for Time International. Rob is based in New Plymouth.
