Fifty years ago, as America sent men to the moon, thousands in southern Indiana relied on water supplies little changed from pioneer days-cisterns or shallow wells often poor in quality, high in sulfur, or otherwise contaminated. During droughts when tanks ran dry, and wells failed, water for drinking, cooking, and bathing was trucked from springs or nearby towns. For decades, local leaders struggled to quench their communities' thirst. In 1975, that all changed with the creation of the Patoka Lake Regional Water and Sewer District which provides drinking water to thirty-three water utilities and thousands of residential and commercial customers scattered across eleven counties in southwestern Indiana-an area that uniquely lacked readily available water. A new generation has grown accustomed to a ready supply of clean water. In Those Kids Deserve Water Too, author David L. Dahl tells how the district changed life for thousands of Hoosiers.

In the 1950s, groundwater was the main source of water supply for the 2.5 million people who lived in southern Los Angeles County at the time. That supply was in peril. Groundwater elevations in the Central and West Coast Basins were dropping precipitously. Massive quantities of seawater were contaminating aquifers. Groundwater pumping was unregulated and the basins were unmanaged. The Water Replenishment District was created in 1959 to restore and protect the groundwater resources of the basins. Today, the basins provide half the water supply for 4 million people in all or parts of 43 cities. Groundwater elevations are at healthy levels, who can pump how much water is fixed, seawater is held at bay, and the basins are sustainably managed and replenished with local supply. Protecting Our Groundwater tells the story of how that came to be.

We could not live without water. Almost two-thirds of our body weight is water. We rely on it to keep ourselves clean, to keep our bodies nourished, and to get rid of waste. But water can also carry deadly germs and poisons. One of the greatest challenges for scientists and governments today is to make sure that everyone has access to the clean, safe water that they need. You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Clean Water! is part of a brand-new science and technology strand within the internationally acclaimed You Wouldn’t Want to Be series. The clear, engaging text and humorous illustrations bring the subject to life and stimulate young readers' curiosity about the world around them. Specially commissioned cartoon-style illustrations in full colour make these books attractive and accessible even to reluctant readers. Information is conveyed through captions, labels and humorous speech bubbles in addition to the main text. Illustrated sidebars headed ‘How It Works’, ‘Top Tip’ or ‘You Can Do It’ supply more facts, describe simple, safe experiments, or steps that readers can take to help make the world a better place. Each volume includes a timeline and a list of ‘Did You Know?’ facts.

★ "An excellent resource on the topic." —School Library Journal, starred review In the developed world, if you want a drink of water you just turn on a tap or open a bottle. But for millions of families worldwide, finding clean water is a daily challenge, and kids are often the ones responsible for carrying water to their homes. Every Last Drop looks at why the world’s water resources are at risk and how communities around the world are finding innovative ways to quench their thirst and water their crops. Maybe you’re not ready to drink fog, as they do in Chile, or use water made from treated sewage, but you can get a low-flush toilet, plant a tree, protect a wetland or just take shorter showers. Every last drop counts!
