This book is the second edition of the well-known textbook Modelling Rock Fracturing Processes. The new and extended edition provides the theoretical background of rock fracture mechanics used for modelling of 2-D and 3-D geomechanics problems and processes. Fundamentals of rock fracture mechanics integrated with experimental studies of rock fracturing processes are highlighted. The computer programs FRACOD 2D and 3D are used to analyse fracture initiation and propagation for the three fracture modes: Mode I, II and III. Coupled fracture modelling with other continuous and distinct element codes including FLAC, PFC, RFPA, TOUGH are also described. A series of applications of fracture modelling with importance for modern society is presented and discussed by distinguished rock fracture modelling experts.

Fracture and flow of rocks under stress and their geophysical and seismological implications raise fundamental questions in rock mechanics, particularly in the areas of tectonophysics and seismology. This text exclusively addresses the deformation and fracture of rock specimens under general triaxial compression, in which all three principal stress

Science of Carbon Storage in Deep Saline Formations: Process Coupling across Time and Spatial Scales summarizes state-of-the-art research, emphasizing how the coupling of physical and chemical processes as subsurface systems re-equilibrate during and after the injection of CO2. In addition, it addresses, in an easy-to-follow way, the lack of knowledge in understanding the coupled processes related to fluid flow, geomechanics and geochemistry over time and spatial scales. The book uniquely highlights process coupling and process interplay across time and spatial scales that are relevant to geological carbon storage.

The supply and protection of groundwater, the production of hydrocarbon reservoirs, land subsidence in coastal areas, exploitation of geothermal energy, the long-term disposal of critical wastes ... What do these issues have in common besides their high socio-economic impact? They are all closely related to fluid flow in porous and/or fractured rock. As the conditions of fluid flow in many cases depend on the mechanical behavior of rocks, coupling between the liquid phase and the rock matrix can generally not be neglected. For the past five years or so, studies of rock physics and rock mechanics linked to coupling phenomena have received increased attention. In recognition of this, a Euroconference on thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling in fractured rock was held at Bad Honnef, Germany, in November 2000. Most of the twenty papers collected in this volume were presented at this meeting. The contributions lead to deeper insight in processes where such coupling is relevant.

This collection of papers is based on a symposium held in 1987 at the Interna tional Union of Geology and Geodesy Congress in Vancouver, British Colum bia. The Symposium was planned as a follow-up to a session at the 1984 Geo logical Society of America Annual Meeting in Reno, Nevada, which dealt with the emplacement of silicic lava domes. In both cases, emphasis was placed on the physical and mechanical rather than chemical aspects of lava flow. The IUGG Symposium consisted of two lecture sessions, a poster session, and two discussion periods, and had 22 participants. The contributions to this volume are all based on papers presented in the various parts of the Sym posium. The motivation for studying lava flow mechanics is both practical and scientific. Scientists and government agencies seek to more effectively predict the hazards associated with active lavas. Recovering mineral resources found in lava flows and domes also requires an understanding of their emplacement. From a more theoretical standpoint, petrologists view lava studies as a way to directly observe the rheologic consequences of mixing crystals, bubbles, and solid blocks of country rock with silicate liquids. This information can then be used to constrain processes occurring in the concealed conduits, dikes, and chambers that feed flows and domes on the surface.

PARTITION OF UNITY METHODS Master the latest tool in computational mechanics with this brand-new resource from distinguished leaders in the field While it is the number one tool for computer aided design and engineering, the finite element method (FEM) has difficulties with discontinuities, singularities, and moving boundaries. Partition of unity methods addresses these challenges and is now increasingly implemented in commercially available software. Partition of Unity Methods delivers a detailed overview of its fundamentals, in particular the extended finite element method for applications in solving moving boundary problems. The distinguished academics and authors introduce the XFEM as a natural extension of the traditional finite element method (FEM), through straightforward one-dimensional examples which form the basis for the subsequent introduction of higher dimensional problems. This book allows readers to fully understand and utilize XFEM just as it becomes ever more crucial to industry practice. Partition of Unity Methods explores all essential topics on this key new technology, including: Coverage of the difficulties faced by the finite element method and the impetus behind the development of XFEM The basics of the finite element method, with discussions of finite element formulation of linear elasticity and the calculation of the force vector An introduction to the fundamentals of enrichment A revisitation of the partition of unity enrichment A description of the geometry of enrichment features, with discussions of level sets for stationary interfaces Application of XFEM to bio-film, gradient theories, and three dimensional crack propagation Perfect for researchers and postdoctoral candidates working in the field of computational mechanics, Partition of Unity Methods also has a place in the libraries of senior undergraduate and graduate students working in the field. Finite element and CFD analysts and developers in private industry will also greatly benefit from this book.
