Excerpt from Third Annual Report of the Superintendent of Public Schools: Of the City of Chicago, for the Year 1856 Gentlemen: - In reviewing the history and condition of the public schools the past year, we find abundant evidence of the deep and abiding interest of our citizens in the cause of education. No reasonable expense has been spared to provide for the moral and intellectual training of the children and youth of the city. Not a single request has been made for the support and improvement of schools, that has not been cheerfully and promptly granted. The High School building has been completed, and the school itself organized and welcomed to the hearts of our citizens. Two large and commodious Grammar and Primary School buildings have also been erected; and no investment has been made more freely, because it is well understood that none could be more profitable or more secure.
