A haunting, an obsession, a calling: Tim Z. Hernandez has been searching for people his whole life. Now, in this highly anticipated memoir, he takes us along on an investigative odyssey through personal and collective history to uncover the surprising conjunctions that bind our stories together. Hernandez’s mission to find the families of the twenty-eight Mexicans who were killed in the 1948 plane wreck at Los Gatos Canyon formed the basis for his acclaimed documentary novel All They Will Call You, which the San Francisco Chronicle dubbed “a stunning piece of investigative journalism,” and the New York Times hailed as “painstaking detective work by a writer who is the descendant of farmworkers.” In this riveting new work, Hernandez continues his search for the plane crash victims while also turning the lens on himself and his ancestral past, revealing the tumultuous and deeply intimate experiences that have fueled his investigations—a lifelong journey haunted by memory, addiction, generational trauma, and the spirit world. They Call You Back is the true chronicle of one man’s obsession to restore dignity to an undignified chapter in America’s past, while at the same time making a case for why we must heal our personal wounds if we are ever to heal our political ones.

An unflinching account—in words and pictures—of America's longest war by our most outspoken graphic journalist Ted Rall traveled deep into Afghanistan—without embedding himself with U.S. soldiers, without insulating himself with flak jackets and armored SUVs—where no one else would go (except, of course, Afghans). He made two long trips: the first in the wake of 9/11, and the next ten years later to see what a decade of U.S. occupation had wrought. On the first trip, he shouted his dispatches into a satellite phone provided by a Los Angeles radio station, attempting to explain that the booming in the background—and sometimes the foreground—were the sounds of an all-out war that no one at home would entirely own up to. Ten years later, the alternative newspapers and radio station that had financed his first trip could no longer afford to send him into harm's way, so he turned to Kickstarter to fund a groundbreaking effort to publish online a real-time blog of graphic journalism (essentially, a nonfiction comic) documenting what was really happening on the ground, filed daily by satellite. The result of this intrepid reporting is After We Kill You, We Will Welcome You Back as Honored Guests—a singular account of one determined journalist's effort to bring the realities of life in twenty-first-century Afghanistan to the world in the best way he knows how: a mix of travelogue, photography, and award-winning comics.

John Upledger has never avoided risks, whether performing an appendectomy in the eye of a hurricane, as he did while on Coast Guard duty in the 1950s, or telling the story of his life. In Lessons Out of School, he doesn't spare himself or others, or gloss over unpleasant bits. Raised by an abusive mother, he learned detachment and the ability not to see himself as victim. The proof in these riveting tales of survival at home and on the streets of Detroit negotiating gangs and peer pressure. Along with toughness he learned to follow his curiosity, creative impulses, and love of learning, which eventually led to his pioneering of alternative medical modalities, most notably CranioSacral Therapy. At the core of each of the stories in this powerful blend of autobiography and inspirational guid—and the reason for its inclusion—is the spiritual lesson Upledger found there that he now shares with readers.

MESSAGE TO MY READERS When I am seeking information about an unfamiliar topic and thumb through a book, I do not want to see a lot of prose that plays Ring Around the Rosie about irrelevant stuff. I am looking for solutions to serious problems and want to see the nitty-gritty of thematter laid bare, and presented in outline form, in a clear, precise, detailed fashion of what and what not to do. If you feel the same, this is the book for you. One of the biggest problems in the inn business is that a vast segment of your guests will not return, not because they do not like your inn, but because they want to explore newplaces. The book addresses this problem head-on and spells out the solution on a multitude of fronts, in easy-to-understand detail, using many lists and outlines, so that these non returning guests are replaced without you spending huge amounts for advertising. Another unique problem of the inn business is that your inventory, unlike a typical retailer's, will disappear if rooms are not rented. This is examined in depth, and solutions are presented to fill the rooms so the problem is kept to a minimum. What is really exciting is that this is not just another run-of-the-mill book about inn keeping. The author was not satisfied with the status quo of the usual business operation and set out to seek perfection. This was not achieved overnight, and every new idea went through many trials and errors before the perfect system was developed. Room supplies, for example, were first laid out in easy-to-reach display fashion in the closets on each floor. This gave way to having the supplies in plastic cabinets on wheels so they could be rolled into the rooms. This, too, turned out to be less than satisfactory because of the restocking problem. To convey what was needed foreach cabinet, two-way radios were tried, and even a video method was considered. Finally, the perfect system was developed and thoroughly tested. It is fully described in detail so the reader canduplicate it in his or her own inn.

Ancient historical cultures all over the world are of interest to modern day archaeologists. Archaeology by definition is the study of past human life as revealed by relics left by ancient peoples. Even though the cultures didn't leave any writings, pictographs, or ideologies of their past, we can sometimes find something that will bring them to life in other ways. Archaeologists like delving into history of past cultures, some of them do it for the prestige, some of them do it for their own past thru their descendants and some of them do it for the collection of relics they can obtain. The Phoenician Coin Mystery follows Jacy, an archaeologist who is investigating the Chaco Canyon Grid, and whose discoveries lead to an interesting exploration into the culture of the Phoenicians, whose way of life remains a mystery to this day.
